How can you use debate to identify biases in your organization's decision-making processes?

Respectful debate has an important role in society and continuous improvement for the most critical topics impacting our world. Ideas and beliefs are what run our world and respectful debate can be a powerful catalyst for positive change. In my experience the most powerful debates have several key attributes: (1) awareness & respect for another (2) focused improvement & learning (3) intelectual honesty & openness to an outcome that is different that what both debaters started with… I love a great debate that changes my mind! Don’t you?

See, a debate is for or against a topic. At least that is what it was when I used to debate in school. Now when it comes to an organisational level, there are a lot of factors that would come into play. Employee contribution v/s Employee expectation is one of the biggest factors. At an organisational level if you as an employee expect something, in my opinion you have to contribute an equal proportion. It is my long standing belief that the amount you contribute will be exactly or more proportionate to your growth within an organisation.

One of the primary challenges with this question is that the term "debate" implies a winner and loser, so to most people it's the opposite of collaboration. Thus, I would steer clear of the terms myself.

Structured formats and a devil's advocate can ensure balanced discussions, while data-driven arguments and logical fallacy recognition promote objectivity. Debate can be particularly useful in addressing confirmation bias, anchoring bias, and groupthink. Confirmation bias refers to the tendency to favor information that confirms existing beliefs and ignore contradictory evidence. To effectively utilize debate as a bias-identification tool, organizations should choose relevant topics that generate strong opinions, ensure everyone participates, maintain a respectful environment, and use debate as a learning opportunity to reflect on biases and develop strategies to address them.

In Bangladesh’s corporate landscape, embracing debate is key to exposing decision-making biases. Structured arguments bring out diverse viewpoints, crucial in a society rich in diversity. Critical questioning and practices like role reversal challenge inherent biases, fostering a culture of inclusive and objective decision-making. We can prepare for a debate in our organization by doing research on the topic. We should gather as much information as possible about the topic, the pros and cons, the facts and statistics, the examples and anecdotes, and the sources and references. We should also anticipate the arguments of our opponents and prepare rebuttals.

2 ways to prepare for a debate: Understand “the why”: Before diving into any debate, challenge the "why" by clearly defining the purpose and objectives. Ask questions like, "What are we trying to achieve through this debate? How will it benefit our organization/team?" This ensures that everyone involved understands the significance and aligns their efforts accordingly. Research/Gather Datat: To challenge the "why," gather data to support and back your standing. Rigorous research equips you with a solid foundation, helping you make informed arguments and decisions during the debate. It ensures that the discussion is grounded in facts and minimizes subjective opinions that may not align with the organization's goals.

The prep doesn't begin 4 hours before the debate; it has to be a part of your org's fabric. In today's org landscape, debate prep is about more than just data & facts; it's about cultivating an env that champions inclusivity. It starts by creating a space where each member, regardless of rank, feels empowered to share their thoughts. The ethos here is transparent—promote open dialogue and active listening. Make it evident that every perspective is not just acknowledged but celebrated. The prevailing vibe is empathy, nurturing discussions leading to enlightenment-driven, bias-free decisions. Inclusivity isn't about hearing every voice; it's about crafting an env where every voice profoundly influences the tapestry of the debate journey.

Sorry, but I don't see this working as formal, prepared, stand-alone events. The formality contradicts the type of collaborative, informal way in which ideas and meaning are shared in teams. Open discussion and brainstorming (not debate) happen naturally if you have created the right culture-- people are naturally curious and want their voices heard. Building a culture in which ideas flow and assumptions are openly tested should be our goal, not creating formal activities to try to compensate for a broken culture.

I would also recommend that every participant be prepared to debate the topic from different perspectives. Be prepared to take both the pro and con side of any discussion that will use this format. This will help ensure education understanding of both sides of the topic areas, take away some of the inherent defensiveness that comes when defending "your" side and allow for true transparancy in the discussions.

Many organizations struggle with Culture and leading values THROUGH into the everyday life. Taking part in debates that are orchestrated and KNOWN to be friendly to being with can help build ease in spontaneous situations that occur in work life. This, however, requires know-how and expertise from the experts preparing their people. If the situation can be viewed as too volatile, perhaps it is best and perfectly OK to have practice runs first!

By rewarding people who remain inquisitive and curious, open to new ideas and malleable in their thought processes, you lead by setting an example. It is very important to view company guidelines for leadership talk to make sure inclusion is "more than words"!

To improve organisational performance, the highlight and action points of the debate should be executed and the result must be monitored to establish the validity of the argument.

Provide training - good practices & resources for employees 4. Create a safe space - people should engage without fear of retribution 5. Diversity & inclusion - everybody should be invited 6. Constructive conflict - teach people to challenge ideas productively 7. Reward participation - recognize the people 8. Incorporate good debate practices 9. Follow-up actions - communicate the decisions made 10. Feedback loops - open up for improvement suggestions

Two key elements of any debate beyond understanding the difference between this form of communication and led discussions is the purpose and format. Like any conversation, respect is required.
