How can you use data to iterate product feedback?

As a product owner! I am always open for feedback on product I built but I will first look into negative feedback to understand problem from my customer perspective. And prioritise the feedback based on customer persona , research whether customer really faced that problem or customer shared the feedback based on review he read from online. As a product owner we should also try to get feedback from people who are not baised about you (Ex Your friend and family)or company espeacially this will help early stage startup founders. Always prioritise feedback related to core product than feedback related to non - core features of the product.

Iterating the product means - continues improvement of the product after analysing the data/feedback via designing, prototyping. To iterate - understand the data - data will enable you to understand your customers/users - pain-points, which feature needs to be priorities. Understand the right data(Avoid misleading data) and take data-driven decisions & shape the product for future by identifying the customer empathy.

In my experience, user claims do not always reflect their behavior. Especially, when they claim that they would like a new feature. Once, multiple users claimed that they definitely need an export to excel function. The team implemented it. But, when looking at usage data, we realized that the feature is not being used. After asking for feedback, we've been told, that this feature would be used only once a month. That way, we learned, that the export function was actually a sort of report, that they would like to receive at the end of the month. ?? Cross-reference your users claims with data. Go deeper and try to understand the real intention behind feature requests.

Extracting meaningful trends from customer feedback can be difficult if it comes in text/written form. One way to find trends in unstructured data(text) is to clean the data for typos and then use a word cloud to illustrate words that were mentioned most frequently. Another way to quantify customer insights is to leverage qualitative data to come up with hypothesis and then use surveys to validate the hypothesis.

It's all about using concrete data to confirm the insights and assumptions derived from user feedback. In refining our e-commerce solution, we compared user feedback with actual usage data. For example, if users claimed a feature was difficult to use, we looked at data like time spent on that feature and abandonment rates to validate this claim. In my experience, prioritization is hard to master. In my opinion, it is better to make a decision, then to fall into decision paralysis or over analysis. A simple google search for "what type of prioritization frameworks are there" will give enough frameworks to choose from. ?? To prioritize, you have to be bold and make the decision(s).

Data being gathered proactively can help you with early signals and take early action to reduce the damage on the churn as well, each data speaks something and if you have your framework built in right way then you need to make sure you act on them as well. Data dont lie :).

Prioritisation depends on maturity of product: - for pre-product-market-fit (pre-PMF), iterating fast on received feedback would empower your team to get faster feedback already on new version. - for post-PMF, clustering should be enough together with calculating impact based on analytics; alignment with product vision/strategy might help to get priority too. In the end your goal is to maximise likeliness of getting outcome at lowest cost possible, and time is money.

With tools like Pendo, Maze and Hotjar, collecting diverse qualitative and quantitative data is now straightforward both before and after releases. Categorize this data into key product areas to select impactful insights for your roadmap. Once selected, analyze each piece of feedback to identify dimensions such as value, viability, usability, and feasibility and tag them. Move these tagged pieces into the backlog and use frameworks like RICE for prioritization and iteration.

As Monisha mentioned, I also aim for data-informed decisions: We observed that 70% of users abandon their shopping carts at the payment step. The time spent on this step is high, e.g., 3 minutes. We now understand the "what". Based on this data, we would decide to redesign the payment step. But, a data-informed decision involves talking to users, to understand why they are dropping the cart: the desired payment method is missing or error messages miss to point out the solution? Next, we would discuss the issue in the team. Thus, after better understand "why" this happens. Then we make a decision about "how" to improve the payment step. ?? Data shows the "what", but with additional insights you understand the "why".

1. Be very clear of what data you want to achieve from the collected feedback. Is it around launching something new, or a next phase of an existing feature, or regarding the adoption rate of a feature, or related to UX etc. 2. Avoid "Data- Driven" decisions, make "Data-Informed" decisions. Collect the feedback and sit with cross functional team members to reflect on and validate the feedback data, gathering other important insights. 3. Build a strategy, iterate, gather new data and keep repeating the process until the defined quality metrics improve.

Just want to point out, that Data is not everything. In that context, lets talk about: Faster Horse Problem. As Henry Ford says, if I had asked people what they wanted I would have given faster horses ( instead of cars!). Customers describe the problem well but might not describe the best solution. Innovation is PMs responsibility.
