How can you use criticism to grow as a thought leader?

Think deeply about what the criticism means and if it makes for you to change or not. Just quickly reacting thoughtlessly can have unintended negative consequences. For example, one person might tell me, "You're too direct." And if I start to be more indirect in my language, it ends up bothering other people and potentially harming the culture. When someone gives me criticism, I need to take time to understand what that criticism is really about.

Aristotle said: "Criticism is something you can avoid by saying nothing, doing nothing, and being nothing." Leaders add value to others. They must be able to remain positive and deal with criticism constructively. In fact, criticism is the price of leadership. Here are a few ways you can use criticism to grow as a leader: 1. Expect criticism. 2. Accept criticism. 3. Keep criticism in perspective. 4. Appreciate criticism. "The trouble with most of us is that we would rather be ruined by praise than saved by criticisms." - Norman Vincent Peale 5. Limit your response to criticism. "The final proof of greatness is to endure criticism without resentment." - Elbert Hubbard 6. Don’t allow criticism to stop you from achieving your higher purpose.

I like some debate and to hear opposing perspectives. I encourage it. I think people have appreciated that about my discussions and seminars. Always have. It is what educated and developed societues do. I even push things to the extrene boundaries. That has been uncomfortable at times. If you are balanced and treat all with respect ut normally leads to a safe discussion. Follow me... truly think this area is my strength.. think some more every day!

Criticism can be a Growth Catalyst, when seen as an opportunity for learning and growth, can push you beyond your comfort zone and help you develop new skills and perspectives. It becomes a roadmap to identify areas for improvement and refine your approach.

1. Our ego sometimes get the better of us and we forget the difference between: " What I did was incorrect" and "I was incorrect". 2. Actions can impact any situations, people, and decisions and some people might come out of it sour, their experience should be our teacher. How we chose to react to anybody or anything is upto us. 3. We are all born with some light and shadow aspects, and throughout our life, we will be reminded that we need to embrace both of them and continue working on ourselves. Our time on this planet is limited after all!

Responding to criticism with respect demonstrates your professionalism and openness to different viewpoints. Avoid being defensive and instead, consider the perspective shared. Acknowledge the feedback graciously, even if you may not entirely agree with it. This fosters a positive and constructive dialogue.

I find it's always important to acknowledge and consider the feedback thoughtfully, especially when it’s negative. Respectful responses demonstrate your openness to different perspectives and your commitment to continuous learning and improvement. This approach not only helps in refining your ideas and strategies but also builds your reputation as an approachable and adaptable thought leader.

Accepting criticism without taking it personally builds resilience. You learn to separate your value from your actions, allowing you to handle setbacks and challenges with greater confidence and self-compassion.

This is the one thing I found immensely helpful in my brand. Living my brand exposes me to creativity and perspectives. Also, it keeps me in touch with changing times. For instance, if I look only in America I have confined myself to a box. Living my brand required that I leave America. I moved to the Philippines to fuel my creativity and personal spirituality. I bring this content to my social media and drive brand awareness. This is an immensely rewarding experience. I "Live My Brand" as a lifestyle.

I will like to add that one of the pitfalls of leadership is becoming neck-deep in one's thoughts and ideas that one avioids entertaining criticism of any kind. Provide for criticisms in your leadership processes, accept them, openly and positively assess them and use them to grow as needed. This though is difficult is the way to go in using criticism to grow one's leadership.

We mercifully judge ourselves, and it is sometimes difficult to admit our weaknesses. It may be hard to consider that the criticism (or at least part of it) is true. This may lead us to reflexively (and perhaps angrily) respond. Rather than dismiss any negative feedback, stop and take a deep breath and do a quick self-assessment. Reflect on the following questions: -Am I realistically acting in the best way? -Are my attitude and body language where I need them to be? -Is my attitude or behavior contributing to the problem?

Set yourself a backlash barometer. Measure the strong, adverse reactions to your ideas. They are a sign you’re doing something right. Ask this question to be sure of it: Did I want to set out to win this person over in the first place? If the answer is “no,” keep going. Great ideas and important messages never please everyone.

I used to get very annoyed if someone would criticizing my work! I learned over the years to listen to them. Not everyone wants to hurt your feelings by their criticism. I always welcome constructive criticism! It helps me a lot to improve myself and my work!

Thought leaders who know their brand personality use criticism as their compass. Leaders stand for something but that means they stand against something too. The latest example is Elon Musk who rejected advertisers trying to bully him with advertising money. He told them "NO". He stood on his integrity and values. The one thing people don't notice is a leader has their back to the enemy. If someone isn't criticizing me then I need to take a look at it.

Don't get a big head as a thought leader. Most people don't know you well enough to be criticizing you personally. They only know what you write. And they may not have read it very well. Focus on that.

In my career, I noticed voids in the industry and I've been around long enough to see life repeat itself. Remember, hindsight is 20/20 then foresight is 20/20 go there to be a thought leader. AI reminds me of the boom of the internet. People lost careers because technology replaced them. The bust came next because there were so many companies and redundant services. ADP emerged as a payroll processing service because payroll processing was the same at every company. Thought leaders go where people are not looking, they setup shop and wait for people to show up. That's what Apple did, "Think Differently".
