Never think outside the problem. If you try to make your new hire broad and try to solve all your problems they end up solving none, effectively. Focus on the 3-4 things that led to the headcount request in the first place and only optimize for those immediate problems.

Throughout a career, a professional brings a range of different experiences and skills to different teams. It's important to review the data in the context of both the role they filled within previous organizations as well as their career trajectory over time. It is imperative that these radical and yet strong candidates be nurtured for who they are while conforming them to the organisation's values and mission. This can be simply be dumbed down to being assertive and open minded with them. Sometimes tradition may not see what the new generation's novelty brings.

Beyond the candidate role itself, critically think about the needs of the business/department in the near and longterm future and make a list of the qualities that you will need. A manager? A leader? A supporter? A detail-oriented person, or a detail-oriented person + multitasking? Really consider what qualities the organization values most in employees that contribute to continued success and future growth. By the same token, a data analysis will not be the best judge of fit. Why? Because looking good on paper doesn’t demonstrate commitment to the longterm. When at all possible, look for factors (& give opportunity for dialogue) that reveal a person who has the attitude you’re looking for (eg, growth mindset ppl will want goals + raises)
