Very often conferences and industry events are used only for networking. Even this networking often becomes perfunctory leading to exchange of business cards. It is irritating at times and intruding at others, to see people shove their cards indiscriminately. The purpose of such events and networking is often not clear. One must first decide what kind of network he is looking for and what is the purpose. Once this clarity is achieved then one should look for events and people who could help fulfil this aim. References or your work could be another imp method to reach the right mentor. Even if you have a particular person in mind, one should find out his area of interest and current work and present something similar to seek attention.

That’s very right as choosing right event is important. I haven’t had good experience of attending workshops as most of them have been without any agenda or purpose resulting in disappointment and waste of time.

Don’t wait too much after the event, sometimes people think that getting in touch after the event directly is a bad thing , but the opposite. Staying connected with people who have been around in event must be done in a couple days, don’t let people forget about you.

The final step is to seek feedback and improve your skills and performance as an HR consultant. You should ask for feedback from your clients, peers, or mentors on your work or projects, and listen to their suggestions and criticisms.
