How can you use communication to identify growth opportunities with clients?

Personally I find tools like DISC direct your perspective and style, taking away your intuition. From experience, people are not one thing or the other, more like a combination of persona's based on situation. Key is to open up all your senses to gain understanding and it does not have to be the first meeting. Eg. I am close to closing a deal,samples gone for testing, unfortunately my contact resigns with immediate effect. In comes new contact, that the old contacts portfolio got added to his. First thing, I ask about all the open trials,it just gets lost, only to realize His style is different, need to focus on one trial at a time. Bearing in mind I have experience with him being pushy before,but now the situation he is in is different.

I find these who,what,where,when,why and how questions so structural. I can picture in my early sales days writing these words down in my book because they had to be filled into a sales report or later on in my career into a CRM platform. I remember stressing as to getting these questions in as opposed to actually understanding what the customer is saying. I learnt later on that, your intent when going to see a customer is to have a conversation, the 5WH method has become a trigger due to its staccato over usage. You as customer know you are being guided to a sales outcome when this disingenuous questioning comes. I see old school sales get tons of info, but it does not close because EQ nuances is missed.

Make sure the feature is a benefit to the particular customer and the value you perceive is not an intrinsic expectation of your industry. Eg, You have capacity to hold stock for your client as a value add, however, so does your competitors because that is one of the reasons your customer wants a distributor.
