How can you use the CLEAR model for remote coaching?

Love this model. The CLEAR model offers an great framework for coaching, that goes beyond surface-level issues. I think its strength lies in balancing structured guidance with the flexibility —be it in pattern recognition, systemic therapies, or even the integration of spiritual and scientific approaches. This makes it an excellent tool for coaches aiming for holistic and meaningful client transformation.

Exploring and making the coaching call actionable is a must whether you are in person or remote. Exploring means asking more questions. Curiosity bring clarity and actions. From there accountability must kick in.

The CLEAR model could be a good framework for new coaches who don’t yet have their own model and would best be utilized in an initial session. Additional sessions should be used to assess and create new actions that have measurable results to the next predicted benchmark. Whether the session is virtual or in person, coaches should create their unique method, framework or process that delivers predictable results. The number of sessions, overall objective and length of engagement all play a role in getting client’s transformational results.

Contracting is similar to what we call in engineering "the basis of design". It sets the parameters for the project (WWWWWH journalist questions, including quantity desired, purities, etc). In my experience, this is perhaps the most important parts of the project, because it sets the expectations! Include the constraints (budget of time, energy, money), and clarify the expectations, so that you can exceed them. Listening is also under-utilized in many engagements. Active listening (repeating back, paraphrasing) is valuable, and the most effective listeners acknowledge what they heard, and then also reflect back some additional experience, and then also ask additional questions that advnce the conversation to the next level.

All these sound like very baseline requirements to me. Simple “Hygiene factors” from Herzberg’s motivation model. Of course you need to be present and attentive! Of course you need to build trust and rapport! Of course the client needs to see you well, and you them..! And yes, obviously you need a good, uninterrupted internet connection.

To start this may sound obvious, but 'sigh' it's not...Turn off all 'ping' distractions (teams, email, messages, etc.). Coaching needs a safe environment, and as soon as eyes dart away and seem to linger in that spot, being present and committed has also gone 'stage left'. Next, add 10% to your vocal tone and facial expressions, to make up for the missing intimacy of in-person, virtual sucks some of the energy you THINK you might be giving.

To use the CLEAR model for remote coaching effectively: Contract: Set clear expectations and boundaries. Listen: Actively listen to your client's needs. Explore: Dig into their situation and options. Action: Support their action plan and follow up. Review: Celebrate achievements and adapt as needed. Embrace technology, maintain engagement, and adapt your coaching approach for success in remote coaching.
