2 How does Chaos Engineering work?

Chaos Engineering follows a scientific approach that consists of four steps: define, hypothesize, experiment, and learn. First, you define the scope and boundaries of your system, such as the components, dependencies, metrics, and performance indicators. Second, you hypothesize how your system will respond to a specific fault or disruption, such as a service outage, a database failure, or a load spike. Chaos engineering works by focussing on random parts of the system such as microservice-outages or network lag. By simulating these we can determine system behaviours and remediate through adequate measures. For example if we are talking to a third party API then we may want to queue our request until we have a successful 200 OK message from the third party.

The nature of having distributed components within our user journey means we have to adequately test integrations and resilience when outages occur. With the nature of dealing with financial transactions this becomes critical and ensures smooth service for our customers. Any data loss during a transaction would be terrible for the customer and break the transaction process.
