When working with clients who have limited English proficiency, it's essential to employ a client-centered approach. Assessing their language skills and choosing bilingual or language-customizable career assessment tools is important. Prioritising cultural sensitivity, connecting them to mentors in their own language, if necessary, and using simplified language to ensure clear communication. Visual aids, a supportive environment, patience, and active listening are key. Understanding the client's culture and customs is vital for relevant guidance. The overarching goal is to empower clients in making informed career decisions, regardless of their language proficiency, by tailoring the approach to their specific needs and preferences.

In my experience, a career assessment of skills, a person over 30, a face-to-face conversation, if an exercise or two, can produce an excellent result. An experienced consultant will be able to assess needs, tendencies, personality and skills better than any structured career assessment tool.

Even clients with strong English proficiency should not be left by themselves to interpret the results of the tests and plan how to use them to achieve their goals. The method that I use is treating test questions and answers as an invitation for a conversation on a coaching session. The topics are limitless: What was their understanding of the question and answers? What they learned about themselves even from this one question? How the results enhance their view on themselves and their opportunities?

This holistic approach can lead to a better understanding of their career path and goals.

One of the tools which can be used is a well known SWOT analysis. The client is asked to identify their: Strengths - what are the skills, experience or mindset that give them advantage? Weaknesses - what are the gaps that should be bridged on a way to achieve their goals? Opportunities - what external factors are in their favor, e.g., education, being multilingual and multicultural? Threats - what external factors pose risk on their path, e.g., being in a new country? Clients may prepare SWOT at their homes, and use a discussion with the coach to go deeper and draw conclusions.
