As in most cases, I believe you start with the outcome or destination. Where do you want to go? Destination is critical, once clear, it must be something that every decision maker is reasonably bought into. Next, we ask, how are we going to get there? What resource do we have or need? Although this may seem a simple thing to do, the effort involved, especially in large organizations is not trivial. A critical aspect of setting the destination is going to be can we maintain course or will sentiment change? It's important to account for these risks before moving to far along because they could mean the difference between success and failure. Once there is clarity here, then we can begin the typical process of assessment.

2 Define the solution

The second step is to define the solution that your fintech service will provide. What are the features, functions, and benefits of your product? How will it deliver value to your customers and your business? How will it differentiate from your competitors? You can use techniques, such as Value Proposition Canvas, Lean Canvas, and User Stories, to articulate and validate your product vision and scope. You can also use tools, such as Capability Map, Value Stream Map, and Business Process Model, to describe and optimize the capabilities, processes, and resources that your product will require and enable.

3 Design the architecture

The third step is to design the architecture that will support your fintech service. What are the technical, operational, and organizational components and relationships that will enable your product to function and scale? How will they comply with the standards, regulations, and best practices of your industry? You can use techniques, such as Architecture Vision, Architecture Principles, and Architecture Requirements, to guide and govern your architecture decisions and trade-offs. You can also use tools, such as Architecture Framework, Architecture Viewpoints, and Architecture Models, to represent and communicate your architecture design and rationale.
