How can you use a barometer to measure altitude?

Digital Barometer: Modern digital barometers use electronic sensors to measure atmospheric pressure. A common type of sensor used is a piezoresistive pressure sensor. When atmospheric pressure changes, it causes a deformation in the sensor material, which changes its electrical resistance. This change in resistance is measured and converted into a digital reading of the atmospheric pressure.

The most common types of altimeters are barometric. They determine altitude by measuring air pressure. As altitude increases, air pressure decreases. This is because the density of air is lower (thinner) at high altitudes.

The relationship between atmospheric pressure and altitude: As altitude increases, the pressure of the atmosphere gradually decreases. This is because at higher altitudes, there is less atmospheric material above, so there is less pressure on the atmosphere. How a barometer works: A barometer usually contains a sealed container inside, which is filled with air or other gases. Changes in external atmospheric pressure cause the container to expand or contract, which causes a pointer or dial attached to the container to move. Altitude Reading: The reading on the pointer or dial corresponds to the current atmospheric pressure, which is related to altitude. So by reading the pressure on a barometer, you can deduce your altitude.

The explanation is clear but I would add instead of capsule the correct wording ,aneroid capsule.And also that in order to be able to measure the altitude we would have to introduce a value that will be considered the reference value This pressure will be introduced through the Kollsman window either in hpa or mmHg,depending on how it is distributed in that specific area of operation.

Before take off, the QNH is set, climbing, at the transition altitude, the QNE is set and at transition level the QNH (or QFE) of landing airport is set. The QNH setting causes an altimeter to read airfield elevation Above Mean Sea Level, when on that airfield. All traffics operating on that airport will set the same QNH. The QNE setting is the barometric pressure used for the standard altimeter setting (1013 hPa - 29,92 inches Hg). The QFE setting causes an altimeter to read zero on the runway or airfield center.

From high to low lookout below! Flying from a high pressure to a low pressure area, the altimeter will have a higher reading due to the lower pressure. By not adjusting the setting of the altimeter & by continuing to fly the same “indicated” altitude you are going to be lower than you think , hence “lookout below.”

Throughout the history of aviation several accidents and close calls have happened due to a wrong altimeter setting. One cause of a wrong altimeter setting is forgetting to switch from standard setting to QNH setting during the descent and approach. In order to know what the correct setting should be we need to know the Transition Altitude (TA) and the Transition Level (TL). Transition Altitude varies from country to country but is a fixed value, for example 18000 ft in the USA. Transition Level however varies depending on current air pressure at an aerodrome and is reported on ATIS. During climb altimeters should be on QNH setting until passing the TA and during descent altimeters should be on standard setting until passing the TL.
