How can you use automation and artificial intelligence in video post-production workflow?

I agree, especially in long-form editorial where it’s easy to get bogged down by the repetitive and time consuming tasks like audio syncing and transcriptions. When starting a project, the only thing I want to do is dive right in and start crafting the story! So, having those tedious tasks automated creates more time to spend on the story and less on the prep-work and everything that comes with it.

I agree, this saves a lot of time and expenses. Although, in my experience still needs human supervision to qc results. But it really is an advantage for this tedious tasks.

One of my new favorite workflow tools is utilizing Opus - the software conceptually uses AI for things that we would normally do manually ie. scene edit detection, auto reframe sequence, etc. The program determines what appears best visually in various aspect ratios for various platforms. Additionally, reality TV is notorious for DIA to be incorrect now and again. Another innovative technique we are using AI for is a program that matches the voice of our talent to correct spoken words or phrases. It's kind of scary how accurate it is, but incredibly cool and time saving!

I have not seen anything (yet) that uses AI that really allows us to "set it and forget it." But the best tool I've seen so far for automation is Mistika Workflows. It has a visual node-connection approach that makes it easy to learn, and simple to troubleshoot. With repetitive Post-Production tasks like generating proxies, exporting VFX Plates, creating deliverables, etc... having a way to automate these processes frees the team to focus on creative tasks, knowing that all the outputs will be consistent. AI isn’t even required to achieve this. I’ve learned to automate many tasks using the right software and equipment to save many hours per day. A necessity as companies lean towards layoffs more frequently and the ones left standing are expected to pick up the extra work without putting in the extra hours required for it.

Use AI to make your post production experience seamless and top notch. With AI you can incorporate versatile elements to your video, bringing out aspects that would otherwise not be possible through traditional editing. At a certain extend this is true. AI is still green when it becomes to video at good resolutions and does not do a great job with more refined tasks. So it can be helpful but needs human support. You can't relay , for now, since it is a fast evolving technology, on perfect results.

There’s some great tools on the market now like Topaz- upres and Denoise ai tools are worth their weight in gold! Also as of now they aren’t subscription based so it’s one of the cost effective tools to add to your arsenal as a freelancer or company.

As far as effects for sound goes, I've definitely started looking into Adobe Podcast for the enhanced speech feature. It's not perfect, and it doesn't work for all sound bytes (garbage in garbage out), but it has been a good tool for some projects. I can then bring in the results into my project and tweak further.

My personal ethics regarding art as well as personal taste get in the way of this endorsing this one. Everyone has a different take on the ethics of AI art, but in my experience, most of the time, a trained enough eye can tell. I believe the inhuman element of generative AI in art and communications disconnects us further from each other in an already disconnected and digital world. Can it be helpful? Sure it can. I don't believe this is actually true. In my experience, the best way to learn how to edit is by watching movies and paying attention to how the images and sound collaboratively make you feel a certain way. Film is an incredibly human art. AI can't tell you that your video's tone isn't quite right and if it's feedback about technical specs of a video, you're most likely better off learning about said technical information from a textbook, filmmaking blog, or forum.

AI powered tools for creative professionals are on the cutting edge of current publicly available and popular tech developments. They're exciting for their productivity prospects and terrifying for the future of video based media. Much of the video content I see online today already has an unsettling degree of generative AI. YT and social media platforms are becoming attention economy wastelands. I have no interest in contributing further to a "dead internet." I think these tools are best used with discretion and caution in mind first and some best avoided altogether.

The flurry of new AI-powered stand-alone tools designed to improve productivity could fracture the post-production workflow and achieve the opposite result. While it's a good idea to experiment with or use the best ones for mission-critical applications, leveraging the AI features available in the more complete post-production ecosystems by Adobe, Blackmagic, Autodesk, and others might be wiser.
