How can you use automation and AI to test and validate systems?

Deep learning(DL) has potential benefits in various areas of software testing, primarily in automating and improving the testing process. DL models can analyze code and generate test cases to create new test scenarios and enhance test coverage. Those models can also generate synthetic test data that can be applied to discover edge cases and to improve test coverage, which offers a significant advantage in situations where actual data is limited or sensitive. In addition, DL models can also be utilized to prioritize test cases according to factors such as code changes, historical test results, and risk analysis that ensure critical test cases are executed first.

Automation and AI foster scalability and adaptability, which are critical for technological advancements. These tools secure capability that systems can answer and be usable to growing demands and new complexities without the frequent need for manual intervention and the associated risks. The resulting gains lead to significant savings in among other things time, resources and risks. One of the most critical advantages of integrating AI into our testing framework the capacity to provide insights and feedback that would be challenging, if not impossible, for humans to generate. This helps teams to preemptively address potential issues, streamline processes, and refine their strategies. In short, it is a helper rather than a substitute.

Chen et al. (2019) recommend a DL-based automated black-box Android app testing tool. The model can be trained on how human users make selections within an app's graphical user interface (GUI) by analyzing human interaction patterns. This data can subsequently be applied to direct the generation of test inputs, resulting in enhanced coverage. Experiments illustrate that the DL-based testing tool outperforms existing test input generators to achieve greater coverage and speed.
