How can you use archival research methods to learn more about art history?

Lo más importante en cualquier tipo de investigación es tener claro el objetivo, una vez delimitado cualquiera de los métodos que se utilizan en la archivística es valioso. Por ejemplo: investigar sobre el país de origen de determinados movimientos o artistas (método geográfico), consultar las fechas de producción de las obras (método cronológico), acudir a los nombres citados en las fuentes, tanto primarias como secundarias (método alfabético) o a los números de documentación, por ejemplo, de una relación epistolar archivada entre dos artistas (método numérico). El método archivístico no hace sino facilitar el uso, conocimiento y difusión de los fondos que se vayan a consultar y por tanto de la investigación que vayamos a desarrollar.

Es importante definir el problema de investigación y las hipótesis asociadas a fin de seleccionar las fuentes precisas ya que en la investigación archivística aparecen datos e información heterogéneas y diversas, dignas de otro proceso de investigación, pero que no enriquecen el nuestro. As a trained archivist, who has worked for a nationally known art museum, my biggest piece of advice is to utilize the archives of art museums and art societies. Also, if you are researching a particular artist search for repositories who hold their papers.

Art mostly involves an in depth peep into history and things that were done before our present time. So, one needs to identify libraries and museums with archives to enable the researcher get access to them and use them.
