In my experience, when dealing with complex engineering 3D flows, it is always a good idea to start off with a simplified but representative case in 2D, where everything from meshing to solving requires much less effort and hours. A well known benchmark case with plenty of available numerical and experimental data is also a great intermediate step to increase confidence in your methods and problem dependent approximations. Verification and validation (when possible) of numerical results is essential for a successful CFD study.

Assuming you already have sound theoretical knowledge of the physics you are trying to model. Before moving on to your problem, it is a good practice to carry out literature reviews or numerical and experimental studies on similar cases to yours. Then try and replecate an experimental study on similar phenomenon. Then move on to your problem afterwards.

Dealing with inaccuracies in CFD is a complex topic that cannot really be summarized in this kind of a brief article, but I want to emphasize to anyone looking for answers here that if you are running a CFD case, always always always compare your answers against known solutions, lower order approximations and back of the napkin calculations. Think of how the flow should approximately behave before running the sim. Then, look at things from a basic perspective, ask yourself if you can answer why flowfields are the way they are, and not just from a mathematical perspective but a basic physical explanation, down to the molecules if you have to. Too often I see fellow students take results from CFD for granted without considering the why.
