How can you train learners of different domain expertise levels?

In the first instance, clubbing learners of different domain expertise into one group for training will make the group discordant and incoherent. Some basic levels of commonality and similar competence levels of participants would make the training easier and more effective. There would still be different levels of expertise within the group. A basic foundation course for the group as a whole with tailor-made inputs for participants with higher competence level would then be the most appropriate curriculum.

Some times the lesson is to technical for a beginner. This calls for the judgement of the trainer. Training for this beginner, can cause the experienced person to get bored very quickly. And training for the experienced can cause the beginner to either leave the training or quit. Yes, both has happened. Segmentation is an answer. However, then one segment of user may feel left out or under trained by the combination of the class. That has happened also. Best result would be to have individual sessions for each level, if possible. However sometimes this is impossible. No matter how you try with this combined class, some segment of the users attending is/has gotten lost and under perform. Not due to the instructor but the situation.

Designing training/learning for learners with different proficiency/knowledge level is easier than delivering it. The simpler approach is to establish a minimum proficiency level for someone to attend training. Also, it is important to establish "expected outcomes". Having done that anyone who falls below the minimum proficiency level is required to attend a "bridge course". Depending on the number of learners you can decide if the "bridge course" is a formal offering or the learner's responsibility. The training program must also include some optional supplemental learning/activity for learner's who are well beyond the basic proficiency level. This ensures that such learners are kept engaged.
