The conventional approach (which I humbly disagree) is to learn different commands/functions/menu etc. Which limits the learning curve. In fact I have seen many who have sound knowledge/skill of using different features of CAD software but when it comes to designing any product idea they unfortunately fail or take significantly more time. The right approach is to target designing specific designs (just like a robot, or any other prototype). While achieving this goal one will be better skilled with the features of CAD software and their practical use. When I learned SolidWorks (CAD software), I set a goal to design a swimming frog robot. In 3 months, not only I designed a very good prototype but also had a great command on the CAD software.

It is very important to first have a critical look over the available resources with you. for instance, there are plenty of CAD tools available, some offer free trial (or even completely free for life with some limited features). In the same way, some times there is a senior person who is highly skilled in a particular CAD software, so it is a better option to learn about that tool as you can have timely and easy support at the door step. In the same way, there are many CAM options available.

There is always room for improvement. The same prototype developed by two different individuals may bring two different aesthetics and other quantitative parameters. It is always good option to compare, share and learn from the feedback. There are some relevant forums where one can upload the design and get the feedback.
