How can you teach reinforcement learning to beginners?

Before moving to Google, I originally was a neuroscientist and though the concepts of RL are not the same in AI and biology, there is still some merit I think in exploring the metaphor of how animals and humans learn through trial and error to explain RL. Just like an organism learns by taking actions in an environment and receiving rewards or punishments for it, reinforcement learning algorithms use an agent that interacts with an environment, makes decisions, and receives feedback in the form of rewards or penalties from that. Over time, the agent then learns to take actions that maximize its cumulative rewards from past experiences, just as we humans would do. I found this analogy helpful as an intro when teaching RL to an audience

The basic RL terminologies are State, Actions and Rewards. To begin with, the agents are unaware of their environment. The agents learn about their environment through trial and error. The environment is basically the "state" in which the agent is . The agent takes "actions" to transition from one state to another. These actions either reward the agent or penalize the agent. The reward or penalty is decided by the Reward function. This is a very crucial element of RL framework. The ultimate aim is for the agent to learn the actions that maximizethe expected cumulative reward.

In this model, agents are trained on reward and penalty mechanisms. Its about chosing the best possible path or option to gain maximum rewards.RL learning approach enables the agent to make decisions that maximizes rewards for the given task without any other intervention.
