1 Assess their needs and goals

Before introducing any digital tools, you need to assess your mentees' needs and goals for their presentations. What is the purpose, audience, and format of their presentation? Teaching is an art and to master it one needs to show the benefit of any teaching to the students. It could be long-term or short-term. This is the digital era hence learning digital tools is essential. -Assessing the digital knowledge of the mentee is the first step - Connecting the digital learning need with the growth of the mentee is one of the essential tasks of a mentor - I generally analyise the grasping capacity of my mentee and then suggest the tools which are must for them to learn and apply - I share the learning of any presentation tool and I ensure that the mentee learns the same in my presence. -I follow the "Make it Happen" framework to help my mentee achieve the task in the given time -

You can do this by demonstrating the features and functions of the tools, providing practice opportunities , and encouraging review and reflection . Start by showing your mentee how to use the digital tools , either by sharing your screen , recording a video , or creating a tutorial.

Also assess the purpose of the presentation. Presentations are typically for communicating something, so it may be that the digital aspect is complementary to the story / message / data, and therefore they need to work on something else.

2 Introduce them to the basics

Once you have a clear understanding of your mentees' needs and goals, you can introduce them to the basic digital tools that can enhance their presentations. These may include tools for creating slides, graphics, charts, animations, videos, audio, polls, quizzes, surveys, and feedback. You can show them some examples of how these tools can be used to convey information, tell stories, illustrate concepts, demonstrate results, and engage the audience. You can also explain the benefits and drawbacks of each tool, and how to choose the right one for the right situation.

I use the digital tools first and then make a note of the most interesting ways in which they work and are of help to me. My emphasis is on keeping the slides simple with less text in case of PPT. I advocate using more of illustrations, multimedia elements like infographics for highlighting the points. Using AI tools also adds to the element of interest and curiosity for effective content creation. Lastly, I also invite the mentees to experiment and share what they learnt and liked. Reverse mentoring is another aspect that works well.

Better than examples is to provide worked examples i.e templates, with short explanations of why they do or do not work well. Let them do some critiquing and creating.

3 Guide them through the process

After introducing them to the basic digital tools, you can guide them through the process of creating and delivering their presentations. You can help them plan, design, edit, rehearse, and present their presentations using the digital tools they have chosen. You can also provide them with feedback, tips, and suggestions along the way, and encourage them to practice and improve their skills. You can also monitor their progress and challenges, and adjust your coaching and mentoring accordingly.

4 Encourage them to experiment and learn

Finally, you can encourage your mentees to experiment and learn with the digital tools they have learned. You can challenge them to try new tools, features, or formats, and see how they can enhance their presentations. You can also invite them to share their experiences, insights, and questions with you and other mentees, and learn from each other. You can also inspire them to keep up with the latest trends and developments in digital tools, and explore new possibilities and opportunities for their presentations.

By teaching your mentees how to use digital tools for better presentations, you can help them develop their digital literacy, creativity, and communication skills. You can also boost their confidence and motivation, and support their personal and professional growth.
