Read their site, their thought leadership, watch their videos, and read articles about them published by business and trade press. Know them. Know their problems. Know their successes. Then think about how you can help them continue to be successful. This is what you need to explain when you're talking to them: How you can help and where you fit.

Every company opens a role to solve a problem in some way. Whether it’s driving business needs, filling a gap, or adding/changing something. How can you identify what that problem is and how hiring you fills the role to solve. Then highlight your relevant skillset for the role you’re applying for and how it helps solve that problem for the company.

100%, explain how your achievements align. Research the company and thoroughly understand what they do, why they do it, and how they do it, and what their challenges have been. Explain what resonates with you about their industry and how in your previous work you developed a perspective that is valuable in their industry, and why. And explain what you are doing to shift to their industry - certifications, courses, degrees, etc. Connect the dots.

Focusing on your transferable skills is a great way to showcase what you can bring to a new role and company. Don't presume that other people know what you did previously. You have to show them. Use metrics where possible or mention positive feedback you have obtained. Show the outcome so a new company can understand the value you bring.

I am not a fan of pointing a giant arrow at a gap. I recommend emphasizing how you align with the role by highlighting relevant achievements. Then talk about the ways in which what you were doing or experiencing during your gap contributes to your fitness for the role. I would only briefly mention the reason for the gap. Don't dwell on it.
