How can you support remote and hybrid team members?

The most important thing when dealing with remote teams is to have clearly defined roles. The biggest benefit is obviously flexibility as people can work as per their convenience. However, there are challenges as well. A physical interface can help a lot in overcoming communication challenges or better alignment of goals. In a remote setting, these aspects need to be taken care of. There is also a certain level of delegation that has to be practised .. only then remote systems can thrive.

Having clear expectations plays a vital role while working remotely. Also, it's best to not assume and rather do over-communication. When going full-remote, we faced an issue when people were blocked by each other and communications were taking place too slowly because of people being not available at same times. We restructured the team with squads having people with less timezone differences, and initially asked them to over lap 4 hours of their work time with the group. We also created away channels on slack, and set clear expectations that if you're not on away status, we expect you to reply with in 5 mins on slack. We also educated people to empathise for each other and manage dependent work in shared hours. The results were amazing!

You should also check in regularly with them, both individually and as a group, to build rapport, trust, and collaboration. In leading my remote team across the Asia Pacific, successful strategies include: 1. Bi-weekly team meetings for communication and collaboration. 2. Regular individual 1-on-1 meetings, fostering discussions beyond work. 3. Creating sub-teams with assigned leads for special projects. This provided career growth through on-the-job training and enhanced collaboration. 4. Understanding team members' roles extensively, avoiding micro-management. I intervened only when support or guidance was needed. This approach garnered excellent 360-degree feedback.

Here is what we tried, regardless of ~75% of staff were initially opposed... We arranged 1-1s with every staff person meeting with every other staff person (other than those they worked closely with) for a 21-person team. so 1-2 times per week, a 25 minute no work talk meeting for all, rotating about 2 times per quarter. After the griping subsided, the team voted 80% to keep it up the rest of the year and beyond. I made it a criteria for wfh and for many, they only came in once per month and I felt they were losing touch with each other. After 6 months or so, we relaxed the 'no work talk' rule and it ended up about 50/50 and most felt more part of the team.

Leaders should enable teams to celebrate each other and success, check in on team members that are not participating, and recognize and appreciate the individual and cognative diversity in the team. Not everyone will want or need to be celebrated or recognized in the same way, similar to co-located teams. However, this doesn't prevent you from creating a space where team members can show up and be appreciated for who they are.

A team full of touchdown players cant alone win the super Bowl.. It's a dream team if you are led by 1 quarterback and a backup in the offensive and may be 1 doubling down as a punter. Likewise in technology team, strategic possibilities and mix of intellectually diverse and inclusive structure is a winning combo.
