How can you succeed in 3D printing research and development?

If you’re going to successfully adopt additive manufacturing into your research and development processes, you first need to have a foundational knowledge on the basic mechanics and principles that go into producing an object via additive manufacturing. If you don’t understand the underlying principles, then the designs that you create may not be optimized for an additive manufacturing process. My suggestion is to start from the ground up. That means purchasing a small inexpensive 3D printer that you can take apart and put back together as well as modify and upgrade. Undoubtedly, you will encounter challenges and hiccups in that process, but by troubleshooting them you will obtain a knowledge base that you could not obtain any other way.

In my opinion, to succeed in 3D printing R&D, immerse yourself in the latest industry trends and technologies. Foster a culture of innovation and collaboration, leveraging cross-disciplinary expertise. Experimentation is key; embrace failure as a step towards breakthroughs. Stay agile, adapting quickly to new findings and market needs. Prioritize sustainability and efficiency in your processes. Engaging with the broader community through forums, publications, and partnerships can also provide valuable insights and opportunities for growth. As with any other processes, beyond the initial capital investment, it requires the support from a trained operational workforce and effective workflow. For any business to consider adopting 3D printing in a serious manner, I think its crucial to map out the ongoing resource requirements in terms of training, upskilling, workflow optimisation and quality assurance systems. This will ensure that the technology can be utilised to its highest potential and remain sustainable to the business.

For beginner- 1. Find why you are in 3D printing and what motivates you. 2. Choose one of the type you liked the most (FDM, SLA or MJP). 3. Documentation is imp- find things from internet, video channels and gather information- 4. Find what is lacking and how to solve those issues.

I utilize HP Multi-jet Fusion printing for a large portion of the work that I do. HP has published a free, well written design guideline for this method of printing. Based on the type of material used there are specific tolerances that need to be adhered to. However, these guidelines only apply to the direct printing of the materials themselves. They do not take into account the possibility of post processing which you may choose to do on your parts. Particularly the vapor smoothing process. You’ll need to take extra precautions to avoid thin walls in your designs when you plan on utilizing vapor smoothing. Thin walls may cause the vapor smoothing to either not occur or it may cause the vapor smoothing to eat through those thin areas.

While rules may appear restrictive, a truly brilliant artist will only create their masterpiece after mastering the rules to such an extent that they can utilize them in unimaginable ways. In my experience it can be challenging communicating to a client the unique design constraints of 3D printing. Quite often I get asked to replicate an injection molded part with 3D printing, and I have to explain the extensive design modifications required to make it suitable for 3D printing whilst still meeting its functional and aesthetic requirements. To be able to efficiently produce designs with 3D printing constraints in mind from the beginning is a key skillset to develop in adopting the technology.

One of the biggest advantages of 3D printing is the ability to fail rapidly and condense the iteratively prototyping process. In the fast-paced process however it can become challenging to maintain version control, especially on a large assembly where parts need to fit with mechanical tolerances. Over the years I've developed a habit of stamping a version number on each part during design so that every print will always have a physical identifier. Makes it easy when I'm sorting through a bucket of the same components.

Absolutely true. 3D printing can be an excellent complimentary process to other manufacturing techniques and have overlapping characteristics. For example, I've found that with FFF technology, although the parts are made with plastic, due to the filament structure within, it can have wood-like properties. Consulting with traditional woodworkers and incorporating woodworking techniques into my designs have produced excellent results on some of my projects.

Technology-enabled free flow of information and accessibility to technology can be a double-edged sword, as it facilitates rapid advancement at the same time opening up opportunities for exploitation. I've had a past client release my designs to several competitors to reproduce hundreds of 3D printed copies without my consent. It's important to invest upfront in both understanding local IP rights and setting up robust contract terms before engaging in business activities.
