To stay ahead of the curve, you need to find your unique contribution to the gaming space. Exaggerate your specialty and make it a defining quality! While it helps to understand the market, by following what others do you can better identify what makes you stand out in this highly competitive space.

Reading news, following releases, reviews and comments, basically having an eye on the market, is a great way to stay up to date. But that dows not necesarily translate into being ahead of trends. Being in that bubble of fuzz & buzz around what's in and out can keep you away from getting ahead because you become just a responder to market conditions that change anyway all the time. Getting ahead is synthesising effective market knowledge with independent, consistent and creative takes on what is at stake: VIDEO GAMES. Thus, stay informed, YES, absolutely! But also rely on your own intuitions on what is important for your game to drive meaningful creativity.

Make it a priority to engage with your heroes! No matter what industry you're in, it helps to stay abreast of developments from your favorite figures & organizations in the field. This is a great foundation for creating products that you as a consumer would want to have/use/watch/etc.

To truly stay ahead in the dynamic world of gaming, one needs to be an active participant, not just an observer. Online communities and forums offer that active engagement, keeping developers connected, informed, and inspired. It is important to also be an active gamer yourself, and engage in game communities to truly understand how the game audience thinks. This is a passion industry with huge variety of alternatives for consumers to choose from. Only the genuinely curious will succeed.

From my perspective, actively participating in online events and webinars is an incredibly convenient way to learn from the insights shared by experts worldwide (who you might find hard to meet in person). Conversely, it also offers you the opportunity to become a sharer of new techniques acquired during your work, benefiting those around you. Doing this helps grow the gaming community strong and builds great relationships with other folks in the industry.

In my experience as a game dev and bootcamp instructor, I have found the following to be true: 1. In game development, there is a constant evolution of development tools and techniques. 2. in an attempt to be ahead of the curve, there is an accompanying pressure we popularly term as the “Fear Of Missing Out” (FOMO) that makes you want to jump on any and every new tool or update without a proper assessment of its necessity to your specific learning needs. Striking a fine balance is absolutely essential here. No one really wants to feel left out with their knowledge or suboptimal with their tools, Having an experienced mentor/instructor really helps here. Online courses as well can help to keep you on a linear learning path.

Just be very curious! :) Try everything you can! Hands-on experiments are worth much more than doom scrolling articles. Play and explore things outside of your bubble. Trends are like wind, they dont care about frontiers. Try to learn new tools and push their limits. Build and make things for fun as a way of learning.

Peer connections and the discussions that follow are your most valuable resources. I recommend all gaming professionals to be active in this area. You can start by attending IGDA events of your local chapter and gradually expand your network with relevant professionals you meet at industry events.
