In my experience, most software developers are hugely focusing on their sprint's load and how to get their tickets closed which is crucial for the success of the project, but insufficient. Ability to take a step back, look at the bigger picture and understanding what is being developed and how each small code/feature shipment is adding value to the overall goal of the organization is a great soft skill often overlooked.

Not only will it help you network with likeminded individuals, it will also instantly increase your chances of getting headhunted and noticed by recruiters. At one point I started a personal slack channel where I posted what I was learning, and over time people at work ended up just joining it and doing the same! It was an amazing experience and shows the power of putting yourself out there

If you are a person who likes to compare and compete with your colleagues. Let me tell you one important thing. Don't compare or compete, instead help and collaborate. Being a lone wolf and just focusing on yourself and your progress will certainly get you somewhere. But rather than trying to do everything yourself. You have a group of like-minded people who are all on the same path as you! Your progression is going to be much: - faster, - more exciting, - more fulfilling. Compete only with yourself and try to get better every day!

I tell any developer, considering the next job, to be willing to take on the dirty jobs. At a previous client, we had a card that made the rounds of all Junior and Senior developers without a resolution. An intern came on board and asked to tackle this card. We were shocked. And, even more so when she showed me what she had done to find the issue. I was stunned at the effort and persistence. I think this is a situation I will never forget.
