One thing I've found to be helpful, and this goes for any medium, be it analogue, 2d Digital, writing or 3d when experimenting with styles, is to look at others work who are in the new style/genre you want to emulate. Get a good set of reference images, and really look at how it's constructed. If you can, WIP images or process videos are crazy helpful. You should never try to figure out how to do something from scratch by yourself, when somebody who is way better at that style already figured it out. Never be afraid to learn from others.

Being familiar with a wide breadth of software is important, but you shouldn't try to master all of them. Get really good at one, and be familiar enough with others that you can work with them.
