How can you show that you are a good team player when working abroad?

It is important to approach a new environment with openness and respect. This involves engaging with new circumstances and actively seeking information. Asking questions to understand how the team envisions collaboration is advisable. It's important to be open to different perspectives and to question one's own biases. Self-reflection plays a crucial role in recognizing and overcoming unconscious prejudices.

Break the ice with food and drinks -- be it coffee, tea, or alcohol. Be wary of alcohol, though. You might get to know too much. Introductions are appreciated esp. when with mnemonics that help us remember each other and unique experiences shared. Also, it is good to have cultural presentations to understand each other.

If you're moving to different country, I find it very useful to read books or watch media that portrays their everyday life somehow.

During my 8-month stay in Argentina from September 2012 to June 2013, I have found that the Argentinian are world-class connectors. They approach you with very open questions ("How do you like Argentina so far?" and "How was your flight here"), then later narrow the conversation down to a more specific common denominator. The openness and warmth has allowed me to establish great friendships that I will value and cherish until the present day. I feel like this way of welcoming new faces in your circle of friends, or even your business, can bring a lot of positivity and thus productivitiy.

It is very challenging to understand different perspectives in a team without judgement or free bias, specially when working in a different cultural environment, one of the things i have learnt is to be genuinely curious and ask questions to actually try to understand rather than to rush to a conclusion of how do i see things from my perspective, i have to practice to assume good intentions like if you are talking to someone you trust, then one can be more open and eventually take advantage of diversity and being inclusive in a work environment.

I try to choose the right channel before anything else. -Video Calls: Use video calls for important discussions. Visual cues help build rapport. -Phone Calls: Reserve phone calls for urgent matters or when tone matters. -Chat and Email: Use chat for quick updates and email for detailed information.

It's helpful to interact with friends and colleagues within and without your field to get a clue which tools and practices are common and useful. Also, don't forget staying connected to those back home, especially when the placement is temporary. Be mindful of timezones. Many people are confused about this - a short note e.g. in a email signature could help.

Another key aspect is Open Communication: Regularly communicate with your team members. Be proactive in sharing updates, asking for clarification, and offering assistance when needed. Ensure that language barriers are addressed by being patient and seeking clarification when necessary.

This one is tricky... As it involves also the ability to perceive the message intended. I've experienced once that based on my colleagues reactions everything was clear and actionable. In 2 weeks time nothing happened so I went to ask my supervisor for advice. Then I learned that culturally those colleagues were not comfortable to disagree or debate and in fact, my messages did not communicate to them at all. Careful in communication always, but sometimes it is key to assess how/if those messages ever landed. Then adjust accordingly. I gathered the team afterwards to discuss cultural differences. Most of them were not aware of such differences, so they expected I'd understand their indirect way to disagree. We had fun and good food after.

Contribuir positivamente no es solo hacer bien tu trabajo, desde mi punto de vista es, ayudar en temas donde tu tienes mayor experiencia aún y no sea de tu área de acción. Es, proveer nuevas ideas ante un problema y no cerrarse a solo una alternativa. Es, no emitir juicios sin evidencia objetiva. Es, brindar aliento en proyectos de alto desgaste por tiempos apretados de entrega. Es, aceptar que hay personas que tienen mejores ideas que tu. Es respaldar a tu equipo y tomar la responsabilidad si algo salió mal. Es, reconocer en público a quienes se han esforzado y logrado resultados extraorindarios, es.. Ser Humano!!

Collaboration: Actively participate in group projects and contribute your ideas and expertise. Be willing to compromise and find solutions that benefit the team as a whole. Offer assistance to team members who may be struggling with tasks or deadlines. Accountability: Take responsibility for your actions and deliver on your commitments. Be reliable and dependable, ensuring that you meet deadlines and fulfill your role within the team.

La importancia de contribuir positivamente en un equipo, especialmente en un contexto internacional. Destaca la necesidad de ser proactivo, confiable, solidario, flexible y adaptable. Super importante enfatizar en la importancia de compartir ideas y reconocer las contribuciones de los demás. En general, proporciona una guía valiosa para ser un miembro de equipo efectivo.

Se contribuye con ejemplo y humildad. Un equipo son un grupo de personas que interactúan, discuten y piensan de forma coordinada y cooperativa unidas por un objetivo común. Es importante resaltar lo de objetivo común, ya que es habitual encontrarse personas en un equipo que no están de acuerdo o no buscan el objetivo común. Otro aspecto importante es crear una relación de confianza , que al fin y al cabo, es la firme esperanza que se tiene de alguien. Cómo continuación, a este asunto es importante crear momentos de transparencia para ir ganándose la confianza del equipo .

Problem-solving: When challenges arise, approach them as a team and work together to find solutions. Offer creative ideas and be willing to take on new responsibilities to address issues effectively. Supportiveness: Offer support and encouragement to your team members, particularly those who may be facing challenges adjusting to the new work environment. Show empathy and offer assistance whenever possible.

If you have doubt, think good. Sometimes "rude answers" are rude in our culture but not in someone else`s culture. Take a two deep breaths and observe first before taking mistaken conclusions.

Ein wesentlicher Aspekt des Konfliktmanagements besteht darin, einen Konflikt als solches zu identifizieren. H?ufig werden Konflikte in den frühen Stadien nicht ernst genommen oder nicht als solche erkannt. Die Gefahr besteht darin, dass je weiter ein Konflikt voranschreitet, desto aufw?ndiger und komplizierter wird es ihn zu bew?ltigen. W?hrend Konflikte in den Anfangsphasen mit einer Win/Win Situation beendet werden k?nnen, kommt es mit zunehmender Eskalation zu Win/Loose oder im weitest fortgeschrittenen Stadium zu Loose/Loose Situationen aller Beteiligter.

En este caso, a mí me resulta útil resolverlo de la siguiente manera: - Claramente identificar cuál es el problema que ha el conflicto y recabar toda la información posible. - Que exista entre las partes, una comunicación efectiva y respetuosa y actitud de querer resolver el problema. - Establecer una escucha de ambas partes. - Ser Responsables en buscar el motivo y la solución. - Consensuadamente buscar una solución. - Encontrada la solución aplicarla y adquirir el compromiso de todas las partes en que no vuelva a ocurrir.

- Understand the local culture first! what may be normal in your culture, may not be acceptable in the new environment. Been there, done that!

Learn by sharing. Sometimes what we take for granted is totally unknow in another places. Check what knowledge and good practices are missing in the place you are now and offer to share your know-how. You will learn a lot about people and place and it may give you extra chances that others will do the same with you.

Por mi experiencia, se aprende, crece de la siguiente manera: - estableciendo claramente unas metas alcanzables. - Estar siempre abierto el aprendizaje de forma individual o colectiva. - Solicitar a tus compa?eros feedback acerca de las áreas que ellos crean que puedes mejorar tu. - Desarrollar cuestiones relacionadas con la comunicación efectiva y el buen trabajo en equipo. - mantenerse constantemente informado y actualizado a nivel de formación. - Ser proactivo y ser curioso. - Y aprovechar cada oportunidad que se presente a nivel de liderazgo.

Finally have a positive attitude: Maintain a positive attitude even during challenging times. Show enthusiasm for your work and inspire your team members to stay motivated and focused on achieving common goals. By demonstrating these qualities, you'll not only show that you're a good team player but also contribute to a positive and productive work environment when working abroad.

The first and foremost - share what you know. There are people who don't know how to apply for ID replacement, other how to make an appointment to visit a doctor, other how to pay parking bill, etc. All those, for you small things, can be of big importance for others. Help them. That's how you will be a good team player.

A tip that I came up with that works for me in any setting including professional: try to remember if people have pets and ask about them from time to time. They always have stories or pictures that they would like to share and it makes them happy.

Being a team player while working aboard involves interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, & collaboration. We must actively engage with our international colleagues by expressing genuine interest in their ideas. We must foster open communication & be receptive to diverse opinions. Being flexible is mandatory. We must show a strong work ethic & try to contribute proactively to team projects. We must showcase moral relativism & cultural intelligence by respecting their working styles, social norms, & business etiquettes. We must be able to share our knowledge effectively & be open to learn from others. We must have a considerable grasp on the local language & actively take part in team activities. We must build culture bridges.
