Before anything else be aware of the number of threats that allow virtual machine escaping. Meaning the threat actor leaves the confines of the VM and is able to compromise the underlying hypervisor. Virtual Machines are like any other computer. Keeping them up to date is very important. I personally love a good sudo apt update and sudo apt upgrade. It makes me feel like I am hacking without hacking. With VMs, updating the software you are using as a HyperVisor is also important. Whether you use Virtual Box or VMware or any others, updating them can be just as important as the actual VM.
