Paper storage, while largely viewed as antiquated, is still necessary for many types of document businesses must keep on file. For this reason, properly securing these documents is often overlooked. Signatures (which can be used digitally) are of particular risk, they can be cut from a smartphone picture and used to paste on to anything requiring a signature. One smartphone picture can steal any other type of data as well. Ensure that the environment that paper is stored in has a digital locking system which keeps an indefinite audit trail. Documents should also be kept compartmentalized within the storage environment, where one key/badge does not grant access to everything.

Most organizations should choose a default classification level that matches their organizations risk tolerance levels. The problem often is that organizations allow the default to be selected by solely cybersecurity so it can really depend on the engineer or analyst. If they are more risk adverse, default will be Fort Knox. If they are risk tolerant or don’t understand the risks, default will be public. Neither of those are good. Use classification levels that make sense for your org and make it easy for your employees to adjust from the default. If they have to click 5 times to be able to save or edit a document, your classification default will be the norm even for highly sensitive data.
