How can you secure legacy programming languages?

IMO the first step should be reading a review of the legacy language from today's point of view, to find what are its INHERENT insecurities. Next step should be to find all the occurrences of those in the code (a good code analyzer can be very useful for this step). If these occurrences are manageable, go for it. Otherwise, a complete REWRITE is very likely the only possible approach. And once you're considering a rewrite, you might as well consider doing it in a modern language (see my comment in the next item).

Modern software platforms often rely on third-party APIs (Application Programming Interface) to provide additional capabilities, such as payment processing, geolocation, and user authentication. Modern technologies are integration-ready by default. API vendors typically provide support for most of the programming languages and frameworks out of the box. Yet, obsolete or rare technologies typically lack compatibility.

I disagree. Migrating your programs into "newer versions or alternative languages" means REWRITING not SECURING them. A whole different thing! Not all legacy languages are inherently insecure. If your legacy language isn't, securing the legacy code would be much of the same process as in modern languages. If, OTOH it is inherently insecure (e.g. using default zero-terminated strings in C or similar language definitely *is*), removing all those insecurities might indeed prove to be more work than actually rewriting everything (in the very same or another (modern) language - which, of course, can also sport inherent insecurities you'll have to avoid).

Updating, migrating are two solutions. If you know the risk and potential attack vectors, one can also just wrap it in a more secure language. Oftentimes legacy applications are "not to be touched". For example if that old C-based application is not immune to buffer overflows, why not wrapping it in a more memory aware language (e.g. RUST based app wraps a C based one).

Treat industrial machines as computers and task programs as powerful code. Authenticate every communication. Implement access control policies . Always perform input validation. Always perform output sanitization. Implement proper error handling without exposing details. Put. Proper configuration and deployment procedures in places.
