Try to be proactive. You really do not want to be in a situation when you are unable to apply a critical security patch because of credentials or knowledge lost with an employee leaving N years ago. For operating systems and web servers your ultimate goal should be Infrastructure as Code. That way you will be able to avoid a tribal knowledge getting lost with people leaving. You are unlikely to get there in a single step but the earlier you start the further you travel.

Start by creating a threat model, without assessing the current security posture you won’t know what’s needed. Refer OWASP website and start with mitigation of top 10 threats. Iterate further to identify new threats and mitigate threats as needed.
