Hi, Maintenance is attributed in two ways .. reactive and preventive. Under reactive maintenance, one has to perform this activity upon incident reporting, one has to ensure SOP is followed. Preventive maintenance - this is also called as pro-active maintenance, vigil patrolling, preatempt and plan for alternative or alternate path on a particular section/route/link in a planned manner.

Just like every scheduled maintenance window and bearing in mind that it is somewhat corrective, everything must be properly planned among all network operators. NOC, Network Engineers, Optical Engineers and the entire technical team must be fully aligned. The bigger the problem caused by this maintenance, the more planning must be prepared. SLA concerns, link bottlenecks, operational costs, total or partial unavailability must be in mind. I add the importance of safety, preparation, disposition and synchronization in the team when executing the maintenance window.

Firstly, conduct regular maintenance checks to identify potential security risks. Label and document all cables and connections to detect unauthorized changes. Use security seals and tamper-evident labels to prevent unauthorized access. Utilize password-protected accounts and access control systems to restrict entry to sensitive areas. Physically secure equipment in locked cabinets or rooms. Train maintenance personnel on security best practices and discourage sharing of sensitive information. Conduct periodic security audits to identify vulnerabilities. Develop an incident response plan to address security breaches effectively. Monitor network traffic and logs for signs of unusual activity or unauthorized access.

Based on my experience, monitor the progress of the maintenance work and evaluate its effectiveness. Document any obstacles encountered and lessons learned for future reference. Document all aspects of the maintenance plan, including tasks, responsibilities, timelines.
