How can you resolve conflicts with strategic partners?

Professional conflicts often have multiple causes, not just one. Focusing on a single reason, and over focus on 'identifying the root cause' can oversimplify and overlook important factors (avoid this advice). Instead, in my experience, both in work and life, focusing on common goals works better. Discussing what we want to achieve together moves us from arguing to collaborating. This approach not only solves problems but also builds trust over time.

4 words.....pick up the phone. Too often parties try to resolve conflict via email exchanges where tone and context can be misunderstood. Never underestimate the power/value in a good old-fashioned phone conversation.

While open in person communication is important, it’s also critical to lay down the non negotiable expectations from each other from considering all aspects of the business. Else the relationship will not sustain and grow. Since the strategic word has been prefixed - I am assuming these deliberations would have already happened. A change in the mutual expectations is causing this conflict which needs to be discussed.

Effective conflict resolution with strategic partners requires clear communication and mutual respect. Start by identifying the root issue through active listening. Listen - not what you want to hear, but what they're actually saying. Almost always, the conflict isn't what is presented in front of you. Most people aren't great at communicating. Sometimes they don't even realise what is truly causing the issue. Listen more; talk less. Treat people with honesty and sincerity. You'll be amazed at how interesting everyone is.

Think of a conflict as a fire alarm. It is designed to be painful for the people so that they get out even if they haven't identified danger. In other words, people usually will not perceive the danger of a fire before it is too late, and the alarm is triggering their reaction in anticipation of imminent danger. The very first reaction to a conflict is to say thank you! Firefighters never blame for a false alarm. So never blame someone for being conflictual. They're anticipating great pain. Sometimes scenarii of oversensitivity happen where there was no underlying business problem. But they're not the norm. The norm is that someone in a conflictual situation is a whistle-blower, deserving be treated as such, with great respect.

We work with a lot of strategic partners, and every now and then, run into points that are in conflict. Two quick thoughts that I’ve found to serve well in these situations: 1. Seek first to understand. As others have stated, it is often rooted in a miscommunication, and/or misaligned incentives. Once you truly pause to listen and hear the partner’s perspective, you can at least come to appreciate the underlying drivers of the issue. A clearer understanding of the partner’s incentive structure (often different than ours) can provide greater context for how decisions are made. 2. Assume positive intent. Rarely is conflict truly malicious; so go in assuming the best and give the benefit of the doubt; and a smile goes a long way too!

While active and open communication is important, it’s also crucial to follow up on actions and setup regular governance to review the matters transparently and proactively before it can become potential conflicts.

Effective Communication is the key to solving any conflict. 1. Listening and paying very close attention to the minute information. 2. Clarifying to make sure both parties are on the same page. 3. Acknowledging and Sharing suggestions with openness and transparency is very important. These are key focus steps to make the communication effective and drive towards conflict resolution.

In my experience when conflicts arise, emotions can run high, so staying open minded and calm encourages a more reasoned and less reactive approach. It’s about expressing our needs and perspectives in a direct but not confrontational way. We should also consider in a multicultural environment, and the way we say things can be different…

Common ground and mutual benefit are beneficial for resolving conflicts. But reaching or achieving them is the trick, which can be done by: 1. Start by reviewing deliverables. In any partnership, you should have a clear set of "deliverables". 2. Win-Win Scenario: Focus to reach a win-win conclusion or scenario. 3.Complementary Skills: Focusing on different skill sets that the partners brings in, which has been an added advantage or will provide an edge in future growth rather than the dispute itself. 4. Clear Communication: This is the most crucial part for preventing and resolving disputes between. Lack of clear communication is a fundamental fact why anything falls apart. I am not a big proponent of traditional win-win approach. It usually ends up in dividing / splitting the win for both parties. The best it lands in is a compromise. Not being able to maximize the return is a primary source of conflict. Few steps can help in a mutually beneficial relationship. 1. Agree on areas of collaboration first. Park the areas of conflict. 2. Understand clearly the expectation from each other and zone of conflict. 3. Innovate in the overlap zones to increase the value and define the share on the increased value In other words, working together to create a value of 200 and sharing that between both is way better than trying to tussle on sharing a total value of 100. Approach should always be ‘both win’.

While resolving a conflict I focused on what our common goal is, and ensured we focused on what needs to be done by Identifying areas that are working well and those that are not. Focusing on common goals has provided a foundation for finding mutually beneficial solutions. We brainstormed possible solutions to the conflict. It's often helpful to think creatively, outside the box and be willing to compromise where necessary.

This is the trickiest part of the process, and the most exciting one. Think about how diplomats are doing their job: finding ways to reach agreements through negotiations, give-get approach and common desired state after crisis. In asymmetric business partnerships, I've been acting as go-between in numerous conflicts and I've experienced the power of these 3 pillars to resolve them: investigating, aligning and forward-looking.

No one is above law.. or the word or the letter. All relationships are subject to some expectations. Agreement of these expectations will serve as a form of law. Create formally agreed structures that build, facilitate and record perspectives and interests; however diverse they may be. This will be your guiding principles. Get back to prior narratives and discourses that are captured in those structures. Hold oneself first and therefore all other partners accountable against those principles. If there is alignment on goals, open communication, clarity on the roles and the value each partner brings, conflicts don't usually happen. There sure are differences of opinions which communication and documents help resolve before they become conflicts. At this stage, in almost all conflicts I have encountered, ego is a big part of the game. Involving a neutral third party helps parties: 1) Pause the heat 2) Remember common vision 3) Focus on organizational goals than personal gains 4) Be more empathetic Finding the right mediation is key here. Legal resolution (without realigning) is sweeping the dust under the rug. Personally I would focus on core value assessment of partners before getting into alliances to avoid later eruptions.

It very much depends on the situation, but it can be a great idea to involve a third party. A client of mine had a huge issue with his business partner. Things got heated. They weren't able to listen or understand each other anymore. This is where I advised my client to hire a lawyer. So, any conversation would be about the essential things without the avalanche of emotions and anger. It worked perfectly.

This is an interesting one, while I have never directly involved a 3rd party to navigate a dispute, I have gone to shared clients to better understand, from their perspective, the value they place on the combined value of the partnership and presented this end-user viewpoint to my client as a step in achieving clarity.

What gets measured gets done! Having something to refer back to is always helpful as it removes ambiguity and the pointing the finger and blame culture. Remember if you are pointing your finger, there are a few more pointing back at you!

Sometimes, Incompetent People portray a simple collaboration situation as conflicting situation due to invalidated assumptions, hierarchical designation powers and bad attitude. We should clear the invalidated assumptions and communicate our intentions for achieving common goals. Listen consciously and find what is unarguable. Companies should promote an environment of open dialogue, collaboration and respect.

Strategic partnership must, like a strategic supplier should not be "be think" in the singular...with this state of affairs a large number of basic conflicts are de facto evaded! In my experience, few additional points to consider: 1) reflecting on the intent and objective of the partnership (that it was set out on) and evaluating if the two parties still have the same intent, objectives and approaches will help in figuring out if this is a specific project scenario based issue or it’s a wider conflict. 2) understanding motivations of individuals that have been involved and whether it’s more driven by personalities and styles than structural / governance driven 3) sometimes it’s also good to resolve the current (assuming customer) issue first before trying to getting into save the world kind of discussions 4) lastly agreeing to disagree and agreeing to walk away from the partnership is also an acceptable outcome

Don’t be scared to say no. And don’t be scared to defend your business practices. Letting partners walk all over you is never the path to success. As long as you are operating from an ethical place you shouldn’t be afraid. Have the difficult conversations and look for reasonable resolutions and opportunities to improve. Just remember you can’t get the results you built your reputation on doing things just their way.

In my experience, resolving conflicts requires communicating in a way that all parties involved hear and understand each other. The consultant can take the lead by fostering a healthy conflict resolution and maintaining a productive work environment. Three conflict resolution strategies I fall back on 1.) Accommodation: This is when one party accepts the other party’s argument. This works best when the relationship matters more than the conflict. 2.) Compromising: This works when all involved willingly forfeit part of their argument to reach an agreement. 3.) Collaboration: Works best when the goal and the relationship are equally important, and all involved collaborate to find an outcome that meets all needs.

Based on my experience resolving conflicts positively means talking openly, finding middle ground, and staying dedicated to keeping a friendly and cooperative relationship.
