Stress and burnout are not the same, but they can overlap and influence each other. Stress is a response to external demands or challenges that exceed one's resources or abilities, while burnout is a state of emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion caused by prolonged or repeated stress. Students may experience a range of symptoms such as low energy, fatigue, or sleep problems; difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions; irritability, anger, or mood swings; loss of interest or enjoyment in activities; feelings of anxiety, depression, or hopelessness; physical symptoms such as headaches, stomachaches, or muscle tension; changes in appetite or weight; isolation, withdrawal, or avoidance of social interaction; reduced self-esteem, confidence, or sense of purpose; and increased use of alcohol, drugs, or other coping mechanisms.
