Meaningful rewards can be such a motivator for team members and much thought should be given to express exceptional achievements. Concerning the topic of safety, I would discourage a certificate or a token that would be discarded and placed in a desk drawer, locker or tool box. A meaningful reward can speak volumes in an employee’s future discussions. For example: Completing a year or stretch-goal with no accidents and receiving an umbrella or a wind-breaker jacket can be a reward leading to a sense of accomplishment and discussion to others about safety. There are so many options to consider but sustaining a safe behavior and continual discussion using practical objects are far better than rewards that would be quickly discarded.

Once you have decided on your recognition and reward methods, you need to communicate them clearly and effectively to your employees. You should explain the purpose, goals, criteria, methods, and benefits of your recognition and reward program, and how it supports your safety culture and values.
