How can you provide quality service to your Graphic Design clients?

This is the first of 6 steps in the design process. This first meeting allows the designer to establish an initial connection with the client and learn about the project. Several questions are asked to clarify any gray areas and understand the client's expectations. The information collected during this stage will be used to develop a detailed “Creative Brief” or “Design File”.

Understanding a company’s ethos and character inform your perspective on how to best represent their brand is important. Dig deeper; talk to employees (if allowed). Websites, numbers and the cursory information provided don’t always offer a designer enough to fulfill the clients vision.

One thing I've found helpful is to understand what is the task at hand by asking questions of the client: Who is the target audience? What are you trying to sell them? Why are you selling this to them? How do you plan to reach them? Who is the competition? This is why the design process is important, as it prepares the designer to begin the design journey, which starts with gathering information, engaging in research, generating ideas, developing, and executing them, before presenting them to the client. Explain the 'reasons why' during the presentation as this is the stage where you're selling your ideas. Give the client time to engage with the work, and to object or ask for clarification on any idea. Listen and take notes. Be confident.

Listening is an art. In these busy days, coming to a meeting with your homework done, one hour or two with your pre-reads open mind and.... attention, seems pretty obvious but it's getting hard and hard these days. The first simple task of listening, and immersing your clients' challenges, asking powerful and relevant questions, and teaching your team to do so, will guide you through the whole process in another manner. You can decide to use another tool later, but the first conversation is pure gold. Everyone talks about what their heart is full of, meaning, the core of the design problem you are about to solve. Just carefully listen!

Been clear from the get go is 99% of the job, imagine working a rubber duck logo to find out the client ment a robber duck. It's extreme example but it dose happens, quite often.

You don't know, what you don't know - and the same is true for your client. Regular communication and clarity into some of the what and why helps builds trust, while keeping everyone on the same page throughout the design process.

When you present work show some thinking and rationale behind your decisions. You mus always use mockups to show the brand or design in real-world applications. This helps your client see the vision of their brand.

Presenting the work properly seems to me one of the most impactful moments in the process. Organization, taste, and good presentation skills are, in my view, the three key elements for a successful presentation. ??

Presentation of your work is as important as the designs themselves, but you always need to have a purpose in everything. So, presenting your work with storytelling can be an effective way to convey it meaningfully.

I emphasize the importance of effectively presenting our work to clients. When using tools like PowerPoint or Google Slides, we adopt a 'less is more' philosophy, avoiding overloading presentations with excessive elements, which can distract and overshadow our work. We focus on including only the most relevant information, preferring to discuss additional details verbally, especially during in-person presentations. We also extensively utilize mockups to provide a realistic representation of how the design will look in real-world applications, enhancing our clients' ability to visualize the final product, whether it's a website, packaging, advertising material, or a logo.

Be objective don't let your emotions distract you when receiving feedback. Always question and reiterate the client's words so you can be on the same page. Feedback should also be consolidated if you have ae big team, saves time going back and forth.

In my experience it has always been extremely important to not forget that the goal is to give your client the best product possible & not to make something that only you think is dope. Yes, designers are the experts but without a client we are just artists for fun. Find that intersection of clients needs & your personal style.

Handling constructive feedback can be tough after you’ve poured yourself into a project. Handling it gracefully is a skill in itself. Coming to expect edits was a rite of passage for me as a new designer. Part of maintaining that gracefulness lies in the expectations I set for the client about edits up-front. After you deliver a draft or proof, ask them to be as thorough as they can be in their first round of edits, reviewing several times over to catch all things they’d like to update or change. Not being stuck in a dozen rounds of edits will allow you to handle feedback with grace. This also sets boundaries with the client, encouraging them to be respectful of your time during the editing process.

Feedback is a crucial part of the graphic design process. It helps us improve our work and meet our clients' expectations. But I totally get it, handling feedback can sometimes be challenging, especially when it's negative, vague, or contradictory. ?? To handle feedback gracefully, it's important to approach it with an open mind and a respectful attitude. If you're unsure or confused about the feedback, don't hesitate to ask for clarification, examples, or suggestions. Remember, it's not about taking it personally or defensively, but rather using it as an opportunity to grow and refine your work.

Though it’s important to view feedback objectively it’s unrealistic to think we can do this consistently, even when we’re good at it. Along with practicing our ability to view feedback objectively, we should also practice what to do when it hits us emotionally. It’s often different situations and it can sneak up on you. Try stepping away for a moment, actively thinking about how to view it objectively and take out the emotion, and remind yourself that it’s about the work. Get past the emotion before responding or jumping back into design.

This is a basic requirement for any Graphic Designer, but it is often overlooked. It is important to be realistic about the amount of time and effort that a project will take, and to communicate this to your client early on. This will help to avoid any surprises down the line.

This is a very important aspect for any graphic designer needs to fulfill. At the initial stage of your process, you must tell the client about the workaround time of your project to complete to avoid delays and unexpected changes.

It's important to always stay on time and in budget, but life happens. If something doesn't go according to the plan, communicate it as soon as possible. Timing your work with expected/reality is a great tool. It takes a while to learn how uch time you actually need for a task, but you will get better with time and will be able to accurately set up expectations for clients as well.

Set a schedule - project deliverables against milestones and always allow for potential scope creep in both timelines and the project requirements - both can shift from your side or the client, build in some buffer room so theres flexibility for any unseen occurrences.

Delivering on time or before scheduled, is a must. Proper scheduling of work enables the artist not to be in a rush, and the client gets their project on time. So never over schedule or over commit. I would much rather have all my clients happy than a percentage.

After you have delivered your work, it is important to follow up with your client to get their feedback. This is an opportunity to make sure that they are satisfied with the work, and to address any remaining concerns.

After successfully delivering your work to your client. following up and seeking feedback is very important to me. It's not just about delivering a project; it's about ensuring it aligns seamlessly with my client's vision. I proactively reach out, asking for insights to fine-tune the details. Constructive criticism is my secret ingredient for growth, and it's this detailed dialogue that transforms good designs into exceptional ones. Regular follow-ups and feedback sessions are not just part of the process; they are the catalysts for continuous improvement in my craft.

I occasionally reach out to clients we've worked with in the past to inquire about the current status of the project. I'm genuinely interested in learning how things have progressed since our collaboration.

Be consistent with your delivery, Build a real experience, i know as graphic designers we tend to want to hurry up the client-brief review phase(especially newbies) but that's what sets you apart in the real commercial world, that's the professionalism your clients look out for, so designing is the easy aspect, the real money is in the consultancy phase, having a real world interaction with your client and making them understand the need for your services. Learn the business of graphic design.

The relationship with your client is as important as the work you’re delivering, make sure to give it all the attention. Don’t assume they know what they want or know how to express it to you, so don’t be frustrated when they can’t. Something I’ve found helpful more often than not is to ask them to find reference themselves in order to get an indication of their taste level, etc… sometimes that exercise alone helps them identify very early on things that resonate with them or things they want to stay away from. Another thing is to be open to some flexibility. The same rules or ways of working will not work for every client. We’re all different and so are your clients.

Not all clients are going to be the right fit. Have a phone call. Feel out their vibe. See if you actually like them and would want to spend time working with them. If someone feels like they are going to be a headache, trust your gut and move on. Saying "no" to the wrong gig is hard to do, but it’s worth it.

I don't BS my clients. I find this works well when dealing with any human – they might not appear to be comfortable with all that blatant transparency off the bat, but will eventually appreciate your MO. AND your integrity will be a soft skill that nobody can plagiarise, unlike your designs.

My advice is to speak to the client in their language, not necessarily professional terminology. If necessary, explain to your client what the terms you use mean. For example, instead of saying “Send me a file with a 1080*1080 pixel format,” say “The first file is sized for your Instagram post.” Or instead of saying “I sent you a PDF file,” explain that it’s a file well-suited for printing. Most importantly, do not assume the client is familiar with or understands the technical designer lingo we use.
