1 Model reflective practice

One of the best ways to promote teacher reflection and self-assessment is to model it yourself. Share your own experiences of reflecting and self-assessing your teaching practice, including your successes and challenges, your insights and learnings, and your goals and actions. Demonstrate how you use various tools and frameworks, such as journals, portfolios, rubrics, or feedback forms, to document and evaluate your practice. Invite your mentee to observe your lessons and provide you with constructive feedback. By doing so, you can show your mentee the value and benefits of reflective practice, as well as the skills and attitudes required.

Some ways to get started is to model strategies and tips with teacher mentees. As a Creative Writing Teacher, I intentionally talk through processes with Writing teachers. I make them see that gliding through the curriculum or scheme of work does not make a learner a good writer. Teachers needs to possess a good reading culture, teach and illustrate Writing stages , Writing tools and writing devices. Planning, Elements of Writing, Sentence Type and Enrichment, Use of Expressions and Synonyms of common words, Paragraphing and Punctuation amongst others needs to be taught and illustrated. While doing this, it shows the mentee the techniques and the pace. It gives them reasons to reflect and self- assess their own teachings.

Feedback is a powerful tool for learning and improvement, but it needs to be specific, timely, relevant, and actionable. For me, the feedback from students and parents have been the most reliable and accurate form of self-assessment. For this purpose, I connect with them at regular intervals to know if there is scope for improvement. Acknowledging both positive and negative feedback is essential to develop and implement improvising strategies. Apart from this, sometimes my instincts trigger self reflection and I make sure to rule out mistakes in future. After all, learning is a continuous process for teachers too.

Additionally to standard institutional surveys it may be very useful to carry breif surveys with your students asking about: The most difficult concepts and areas. The most useful teaching techniques. The most enjoyable sessions. The most boring and hard ones. What were the reasons? What would they change and how? Careful reading and filtering may help to improve your teaching.
