How can you promote social entrepreneurship in education?

The primary step towards promoting social entrepreneurship is to burst a deep rooted myth in students' minds. There is a general misconception that social entrepreneurship or social enterprise are not-for-profit enterprises. This needs to be clarified that social enterprises are just like any other enterprise who intend to earn profits but profits are not the primary objectives of social enterprises. Social entrepreneurs are driven by the urge to solve a social problem which may include societal issues, environmental problems, problems faced by any specific community, etc... but they do intend to earn profits while trying to solve such problems. Like, 'Esscent by Arpan' focuses on upcycling dried flower waste into premium incense products.

Social entrepreneurship is the process by which individuals, startups and entrepreneurs develop and fund solutions that directly address social issues. A social entrepreneur, therefore, is a person who explores business opportunities that have a positive impact on their community, in society or the world.

To promote social entrepreneurship in education, I can integrate it into the curriculum and organize workshops, seminars, and guest lectures by successful social entrepreneurs. I'll also create hands-on projects and incubator programs where students can develop their own ideas. Partnering with NGOs and local businesses will provide practical experience and mentorship. By fostering creativity and a focus on social impact, I can help nurture the next generation of social entrepreneurs.

Choosing the right problem to solve is an important aspect of entrepreneurial journey of any founder. Entrepreneurial journey is full of setbacks and an overwhelming journey. If we look around, we would many societal, environmental, community focused, livelihood based problems. Imagine an entrepreneur chooses to pick up a random problem to solve and leaving it mid-way because the problem or the solution does not interest him/her. The time, efforts, team enthusiasm, investment, putting everything on halt just because the founder is not interested anymore, is that fair? Pick a problem you are connected to. I am not saying you should be affected by it, but you should feel the urge to solve for greater good, not just for the sake of solving.

Social problems encompass a wide range of issues that affect communities and societies, including poverty, inequality, discrimination, access to healthcare and education, environmental degradation, homelessness, unemployment, human rights violations, substance abuse, mental health challenges, and more. These problems often impact individuals and groups, creating barriers to well-being, equality, and overall societal progress. Addressing these issues often requires a multifaceted approach involving government policies, community efforts, and social entrepreneurship to create sustainable and impactful change.

Promoting social entrepreneurship in education requires first examining social issues. It makes students aware of urgent problems and inspires them to work toward constructive change. First of all, it draws attention to the scope and complexity of societal issues. Students acquire a thorough understanding of the complexities and underlying causes of particular problems by digging deeper into them. This empathy serves as motivation for those who want to start social businesses.

Coming from the Middle East, where many countries are still developing, I find it easier to notice social issues. As an educator and trainer in both developed and developing countries, I've noticed that my students approach identifying problems differently. In developing countries, it's straightforward for students to identify issues since they often relate to basic needs. On the other hand, students from developed countries take more time to identify issues. Furthermore, the types of issues they explore and observe differ in terms of their global impact.

These strategies aim to address societal challenges by fostering businesses with embedded social missions, advocating for policy changes, empowering communities through education and skill-building, utilizing technology for social good, fostering collaborative efforts between various stakeholders, and raising awareness through education. This multifaceted approach is crucial for creating sustainable change and addressing issues like poverty, inequality, environmental degradation, discrimination.

A great idea and mission can go nowhere if the message is not properly delivered. A big part of social entrepreneurship education is to learn how to deliver the message.

It improves communication skills, to start. Students must be able to express their ideas succinctly, clearly, and persuasively in order to create an engaging pitch. A pitch presentation of a social idea fosters belief in the idea's potential impact. Students are motivated to act and bring their ideas to life by this confidence.

Implementing social projects is a great way for social entrepreneurship to be experienced first-hand. That way, students can go through all the process of turning an idea into reality, including pitching and troubleshooting.

It also fosters a sense of accountability and ownership. It takes dedication and accountability to take a project from conception to completion, instilling in students the value of completing tasks.

As an instructor, bestowing recognition on students for their good work, insights, or achievements is a great way to build their confidence and reassure them that they are headed in the right direction. Similarly, creating opportunities for students to recognize and appreciate one another is a great way to strengthen bonds and relationships. Cultivate a culture of celebration and appreciation and you'll be amazed by what follows.

One of the most important tactics for fostering social entrepreneurship in education is to celebrate social accomplishments. One of the key benefits of entrepreneurship is that done well it is incredibly empowering. Instead of protesting, why not provide a better solution to a social problem. If you can bring a crowd with you, you will change things - and probably a lot faster and more effectively than Government can. A lot of my work with marginalised communities has shown this to be the case, but it takes courage to get started.

Consideration of financial viability of the solutions is completely missing in these steps. You can't be an entrepreneur (social or otherwise) with having a business idea that is researched and stacks up financially. This in my experience is one of the missing links in social entrepreneurial education. It can't be left to mainstream business finance education either as there are different drivers such as profit maximisation for shareholders rather than creation of social value and impact. It needs to be understood and accounted for throughout the process.

You need to know both SE and HE to be able to do this effectively. There is no easy way in. Building your network and gaining experience in both will help to identify the fundamental ingredients that encourage social enterprise to thrive in tertiary education - including the right mix of funding, support and crucially culture amongst students, staff and alumni.
