How can you promote academic integrity in an online classroom?

When we promote integrity we inculcate a culture of righteousness. It is an all pervading ethical valuesystem. Online education does not exist outside its purview. Integrity is either present or absent. One cannot school another in it. One is either a disciple or one is not. It starts from one's family and is exemplified by the family first.

It is extremely critical to not only have the Academic Integrity policies developed and documented but also make them easily accessible and continuously communicated to ensure awareness and clarity. Academic Integrity in an ongoing culture that needs to be nurtured and not a one time intervention.

If we can design assessments in a way that they can aid the learning(assessment for learning) and truly assess progress of a student against the learning objectives, then students will also feel motivated to achieve the same.

From a learning experience and design perspective; Educators can promote academic integrity by setting clear expectations, fostering a culture of honesty, using diverse assessment methods, and incorporating collaborative activities that encourage active learning. Students play a crucial role by understanding and respecting academic integrity policies, citing sources properly, and actively engaging in the learning process to reduce the temptation of dishonest practices. Regular communication and awareness campaigns can further reinforce the importance of academic honesty.

Before we even discuss the how’s and what’s of Academic misconduct , it might be worthwhile to explore the “why” as well. If students feel motivated to actually “ learn” (and not focus on grades, competition, etc), they themselves will realise that any form of academic misconduct will actually deter them from achieving their learning objectives. If the education system can create the formative learning experience , students will no longer yield to the stress and pressure and focus on the actual learning and development which is the primary goal for any academic endeavour .

First off, you cannot enforce academic integrity. It is present, or it is not. You can take actions to—confirm—that students/instructors contribute their own authentic work, but even the best system can be outmaneuvered. In a world where a person's reputation is as fleeting as a name change, or seemingly permanent as a viral internet post, institutions are wise to distill their policies to simple principles that are consistently reinforced. At the end of the day, participants in any academic enterprise fall into only one of a handful of categories: A. Violator, but was accountable and made amends B. Violator with little/no accountability C. Ignorant violator D. Suspected of violation(s) E. No suspicion of any wrong conduct
