A solution can be automated but most of the time it is limited to monitoring and not executing a solution. This is true because the problem shouldn't repeat if addressed properly and from my experience I have seen the cause is always new and the solution is always different. The best way I propose is to automate monitoring and have automated analysis providing feedback as what might be the cause and where to look making it easy for us to focus on the precise section.

From my experience you would learn from what happened and then create a new process to prevent it and automate the process if it makes sense to do so. You can’t automate before you go over your lessons learned.

I agree to everything each and every contributor have said earlier on this topic but I would give my two cents too. Server Admins are not the genie's from Alladin Lamp or witches from Hansel & Gratel to know things by some magic about their server racks both hardware and software wise. We rely mainly on Alarms and the system of alarms generation, delivery and priority, for those of us who know the art of making these Alarm policies always succeed in keeping their servers available, optimized and accessible all the time. No wonder there are exceptions and we can't just out run the possibility of human errors but an automated and well drafted Alarm generation and delivery policy is 70% of the maintenance out of all other exercises.

I would add monitoring as an item to consider. Granted, there is a base expectation for receiving information about any server errors or function changes through user reports, SNMP, pings, etc. However, reviewing and possibly expanding your visibility should always be considered throughout each of these steps. Not all of us have advanced monitoring in place such as Windows service monitoring, session monitoring, or maybe log reporting. Being able to see all possible issues and resolution is imperative for improving prioritization. Remember if you are not monitoring it, you cannot control it.

A critical piece I feel is missing is overall communication… Not just communicating the plan, but communicating the outage, notifying key stakeholders, giving a regular cadence of updates. I know from being on the engineering side it takes away from your time to resolution, however, the further along you get in your career the more this will become a key part of the process.

In addition, the infrastructure must be periodically maintained quarterly (check health) to avoid any problems, and there must also be. Spare part for compute resource ram, CPU, fan, power supply,etc, when a problem occurs in any of them, it is changed immediately. In small companies, instead of DR site, you can work as a replication for critical data in the server if one of them failure second one is up.
