However, if the patents are not going to be commercialized, it is actually a waste of resources. So priorities need to be return on investment focused to get the best profitability as well as impact consumers lives. Don’t innovate for the sake or innovation. I believe that most competitive advantages are short lived these days. You can be ahead of the rest for a while, but they will catch up and improve on your offering. Even if they don't changes in user needs and wants change, so you have to stay ahead and plan for different futures. #Strategic foresight

You get what you reward. If you are prioritizing intellectual property, you need to recognize and reward people who are successfully creating and delivering IP. Inventors have great value to the organization, but they are often introverted and isolated. Keeping talented innovators engaged is key.

Most IPs are useless, even though protected by the statutes if they are unenforceable. From an IP perspective, enforceability should be the ultimate goal while strategizing to create new stuff. The best way to ensure enforceability is to look out for two things: 1. Knowing the law around protecting intellectual properties. This will help you to understand the extent of protection. You'll get to know what not to do while strategizing and creating new stuff. 2. Market research to have an idea of what other people are already having in their pockets, so that you remain aware while navigating the path to enforceable creation.

I think Dawn summed it up right. You reward what you think is valuable. I have had companies in the past give $10-$25 to those who submit an idea. In my current company, I can’t do that, but I do give out “candy bar” awards that come with a certificate, a candy bar, and public recognition to management. That has resulted in the faucet of ideas being turned on and people feeling like their ideas and contributions matter.

Coming from the developing countries perspective. Don't expect IP to really help since controls are loose. Expect to see copy and paste of your solution, hence the question is how do you ensure you are always ahead of the game (innovation and value addition). At times your brand will help connect your customers to your products and the moment they can relate and connect, thats the best IP
