How can you prepare volunteers to work with people of different immigration statuses?

Assisting migrants with their immigration issues starts well before taking watching some youtube videos about the immigration system. It involves observing the struggles of migrants, including their histories of migration, and understanding that you are in a place of relative privilege compared to them. Then it requires participating in a process with them that can be extremely difficult for anyone, let alone someone who may be unfamiliar with the complex forms that migration authorities force them to fill out. Your role is to sit alongside them in this struggle and simply help. Knowing this will not only allow you to volunteer effectively, but also have a more fulfilling experience.

One thing I find useful while volunteering in an international context is always to be informed! I would say that it also applies in this situation. First of all, the person in charge of the volunteers needs to be fully aware of the processes and able to assist at any time. Therefore, it will be easier to pass on the knowledge to the volunteers and help them whenever needed. Of course, researching the matter on a personal level as a volunteer is crucial and highly recommended! In the end, it all comes down to being willing to help. If you really want to make a difference and offer your help, it will be much easier to learn all the needed information and knowledge to be able to do so adequately!
