How can you prepare for a successful mentorship meeting?

Before thinking of your goals, you should first try to understand who your mentor is, what sort of journey they had, the challenges the overcameand what does he/she brings to the table. Your goals should align to those for you to make most of them.

Take the time to research your mentor's background, expertise, and professional accomplishments. This will not only show your mentor that you value their time but also help you ask more informed and relevant questions.

A successful mentorship meeting will start well before the official first meeting! Doing your homework (clear thinking about your objectives) and working out what you want to achieve will be key. Mentors are greatly empowered through clarity from their mentee as it enables focus on the right capabilities and aspirations. It is also useful to understand a bit about the program you are involved through as there will be additional support provided as you work with your mentor.

It is very important to plan about what you want to discuss. Given the both parties mentor and mentee know the goal of the mentorship relationship, it is important for the mentee to come prepared with questions and topics to discuss. So come organized with questions and situations you would like to hear the mentor’s perspective. Make a good use of the mentor’s time by sharing the questions in advance. Have follow up questions and keep the conversation going. A Mentorship relationship is a two way street. Mentors need to be open and engaged, and mentees need to be prepared, organized and ready to direct the direction of each conversation.

To get the first meeting off to a great start I would also encourage sharing a summary of what you have explored in advance related to your objectives. For example, inspirational articles/books, podcasts etc... This can be shared with your mentor ahead of the meeting which will ultimately help your mentor understand you more deeply which will enable more targeted insights and guidance.

Inevitably at the start of the mentorship there will be a period of getting to know each other especially if you have been paired together in a formal mentoring program. From past experience it is vital for both parties to remain both open-minded and flexible regarding their own personal style which may be challenged and require some adjustment. A willingness to adapt will be key to a successful experience for both mentor and mentee!

Set a positive and proactive mindset: Approach the meeting with a positive attitude and a willingness to learn and grow. Be proactive in seeking advice and feedback from your mentor. Prepare specific questions: Come prepared with specific questions or topics you want to discuss with your mentor. This shows that you are proactive and have thought carefully about how to make the most of your time together.

The most important thing is that it's not just transactional. Cultivate the relationship, bring in the human angle and touch. Leave those and you could very well have an AI bot as a mentor. The most successful mentor-mentee engagements that I have witnessed are the ones where both are "invested" and both bring in thier "true selves".
