The decade also will be dominated by Globalization. To succeed you need a "GLOCAL" Mindset, and you must embrace Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) on a global scale. Successful executives will actively pursue these technology and human endeavors.
Being future-ready is paramount across all industries. As a leader, it's essential to equip yourself, your team, and your organization with the latest technologies to sustain growth and effectively tackle the rapid changes and challenges ahead. This proactive approach enables you to navigate through various situations with agility and adaptability, ensuring long-term success in an ever-evolving landscape.
You work toward the future that you can see. If you don't see yourself as a manager, you're not going to get there. So get that image of yourself as a leader in place. Then define what leadership means for you. Work to make that definition a reality.

Still, I want to start by saying that digital transformation begins with fully utilizing and understanding the technology we already have. We have people who only use their smartphones for phone calls, text messages, and video games. If you want to advance employees, you have to advance the culture, including other countries. Since we've been manufacturing our equipment, I've noticed that it seems the world advances in semi-circles where it doesn't come all the way back around to grow. It just stops there, and we move on to the next shiny thing.

Diversity, Uh Oh?? Talking diversity in 2023, but we must. People use comfort, fear, teachings, culture, religion, emotions, etc., to gravitate toward their own, not always about color or race. In college, I found myself hanging with a few guys on the basketball team and a White guy from the baseball team. Why the guys from basketball were teammates, and why the White guy? Because we were both from the South and had more in common than I did with most of my Black teammates who were from the North. I make my diversity purposeful, intentional, thoughtful, and deliberate in every way possible. My friends were diverse as a boy, but our parents weren't. In some cases, diversity must be introduced, taught, appreciated, interpreted, and shared.

To prepare to be an executive manager in the next decade, you should first and foremost cultivate humanity and empathy, as those will be the major leadership traits during the decades to come. Leading your team, understanding their motivations, drivers, challenges, and barriers they face is the key to ensuring progress and success. Being comfortable with AI and technology is important; however, maintaining creativity and being a visionary regarding the human nature of decisions made will often differentiate long-term success from the similarity of solutions that technology may offer under the same set of incoming data.
Executive managers of the next decade will need to have key skills in social quotient and emotional quotient. Increasingly, being able to influence, connect, and inspire more than 5 generations in the workforce and especially in the US, being able to work across cultures, develop talent that doesn’t look like the traditional white male executive (eg gravitas, aggressive, “right” appearance, skillful communication.) but also respect for others, inclusiveness, have risen on the list.

A leader’s EQ will determine success over the next decade. Bosses of the old style will be antiquated and left behind. Only leaders who are people-first will succeed. It’s not a matter of if, but when. An emotionally intelligent leader will be a successful leader.

It can help you access new ideas, resources, and markets, and enhance your reputation and credibility. To expand your network, you need to identify and connect with people who share your interests, values, and goals, and who can complement your skills and knowledge. You also need to maintain and nurture your relationships, by providing value, trust, and reciprocity.
It's Not As Easy As It Should Be Especially man to woman, color, cultural backgrounds, corporate status, and the list is long. Many of you here know I will reach out to you. I will ask to be your connection. You know, from time to time, I will ask questions about you and what you have going on. I have zero fear of you telling me to F-off or (you) unfriend me. When I read your bio, I see why we should connect regardless of whether it is now or later. When other people send me a connection? They see where we connect or want us to know each other. There is a but. In fairness, most people don't have the mentality to reach out to strangers. Getting a rejection, awkwardness, and weirdness can be genuinely uncomfortable.
One of the key ingredients of executive leadership is thought leadership. This requires executives to continuously learn from peers, innovators in the industry, and competitors or Frenemies. A wide network made up of in industry and out of industry folks in your network will increase your ability to see around the corner, see parallels, and see divergences. by engaging with this adverse network, you continuously improve your ability to be at the front of your function, industry, and leadership.
Networking will remain a critical asset for executives. Building and maintaining relationships with industry leaders, thought influencers, and diverse professionals will help you stay informed and create new opportunities.
Learning is the process of acquiring new or improving existing skills, knowledge, and abilities. It can help you stay relevant, competitive, and adaptable in a dynamic and complex world. To keep learning, you need to identify your learning needs and goals, and pursue formal or informal learning opportunities that suit your style and preferences. You also need to apply and share your learning, and reflect on your progress and outcomes.
With the world changing so rapidly and technology appearing almost overnight, it is actually an opportunity for one to practice continuous learning. But what does one embrace or learn? Here are some quick handles to guide: 1. Relevance to your expertise For example, AI being used for marketing. It helps one be a better/faster copywriter. You become an editor, briefing the AI and then doing minor edits 2. Future-proof skills What is expected to disrupt your industry or the world? Perhaps it is good to look further into it, especially with micro learning now easily available online. 3. Something fun! Good mental and emotional health contributes to quality and longevity, good to learn how to embrace those
Lifelong learning is essential. Invest in your own professional development by staying up-to-date on leadership best practices, emerging technologies, and management techniques. Executive education, mentorship, and industry events can keep your knowledge current.
Learning Learning how to be diverse involves understanding and embracing differences. You have to appreciate the most minor differences. Learning how to connect focuses on building meaningful relationships regardless of those differences. Contributions of inclusive and positive interactions happen over time. Don't feel rushed to have a conversation or a relationship. Start with just asking the person to connect with you. The wonderful thing about social media is it's expected. Just be polite and respectful. From time to time, you may put your foot in your mouth with comments or messages; that's also expected. How you move forward with an attitude of respect and more respect lets the people know your true intentions and character.
Learn continuously: Keep up with emerging trends and skills. Lead effectively: Inspire and guide teams with integrity. Network widely: Forge connections across various sectors. Embrace tech: Utilize digital advancements for progress. Manage diversity: Harmonize different generational workforces. Think globally: Understand international market dynamics. Champion sustainability: Lead with an eco-social conscience. These steps will help navigate the evolving business landscape and foster a forward-thinking, adaptable leadership approach.
Having experienced over three decades of work in different continents and across various cross-cultural settings, I have seen huge shifts in both workplace management and workforce behavior. One must be open to appreciate these changes and be able to adapt to the 'new' or 'different' ways of managing staff. Some of these changes may require the managers to learn new skills (AI, apps, new softwares etc.), whilst others may demand appreciation for the changes happening in aptitude, behavior, social skills, expertise, emotional maturity of the new band of staff who are joining the workforce. Blending this with one's personal experience, insight and values will give a strong foundation for future executive management functions.
Level 5 leaders in this AI era require mastery over these five quotients: 5. Digital Quotient: Tech savviness, understanding of AI, API, enterprise tech, consumer tech, infosec. 4. Environmental quotient: Awareness of your surroundings: Colleagues, clients, market, and trends 3. Data Quotient: Move from being data-distanced to data-driven decisions. 2. Consciousness quotient: Self-awareness. It is about knowing how to communicate with yourself and winning over your inner enemies. 1. Spiritual Quotient: Finding a larger purpose, practicing mindfulness, detachment Start with the last one and move up. Conquer yourself first. The world the surrounding people will automatically surrender.
None of us has a crystal ball to know what it will take to be an Executive Leader in the next decade. One thing we can be certain of is it will look very different than 10 years ago, and very different from today. That means to me you can't be dogged or stubborn in your approaches. Get rid of "Yes" Men and Women. You must be humble and curious. You must surround yourself with diversity and diverse experiences and perspectives. No one knows where the best ideas will come from so build a culture of a safe place to be vocal and challenge, but once a decision is made a culture of passionate action and accountability.
