How can you prepare for a debate presentation when you are unfamiliar with the topic?

A QUESTIONING MIND All, it takes to prepare for a debate, is a questioning mind. This must be the first step rather than making any desperate attempt to garner facts and more facts. Let us grow creative. Say, for instance, you have to prepare for a topic - 'Rule Of Law' . We can start our preparation by raising certain fundamental questions like, why is the need to debate this topic? Why is there a crying need for the rule of law in every society? Why is human dignity considered to be of paramount importance for establishing the rule of Law? Thus, we can conclude that preparation for a debate must begin by asking a few basic questions concerning the topic.

Having an in depth understanding on the objectives of the debate, will provide the foundation for your preparation. At such, you will then be able to address the unfamiliarity by probing further on the topic, of course relating it to what the debate aims to achive.

Understand the topic based on the debate argument first. Use the debate argument as a starting point to understand the topic and research both sides of the issue. Pick a small cut in point and research the topic while growing the scope. Ask critical questions to help yourself to define the scope of research and of course it's always helpful to involve an expert in this area.

Start by thoroughly reading and researching the topic to gain a basic understanding of its key concepts, arguments, and controversies. Break down the topic into smaller components or subtopics to make it more manageable for research and analysis.

Prepare your presentation well and make it factual. Never guess or knowingly make assumptions, which is why research is paramount with this topic.

Personally, I never speak on issues that you are not educated on and never argue any point that you can not back up with credible facts.

This is true since it will keep you grounded and somewhat prepared to where shells from the other sdie might be coming. Connected to my previous point, finding an intriguing point within, ideally a bit in the center so not really supporting any of the sides but opening to a bridging possibility will bring you close to a homerun. Still, like with any research, do your homework but don't be scared too easily. In the past years "debunking", labeling something as a rouge theory or even a conspiracy theory sent many good ideas in the intelectual "prison" however luckilly for a critical and researching mind, many were shown to be substantiated. As a lawyer, we are trained to defend our client even if we do not necessarily believe in the position they took. I believe this comes in handy here. you have to build your case to convince yourself first before your audience. This will help you build confidence in yourself and that confidence will simmer into your presentation delivery. What better way to do this than doing your full research, having all your facts ( for and against) and slowly work on a convincing presentation. Personally, I would advice that you always use practical relatable experiences to bring the fact home. Let your presentation flow and climax with what you consider the most convincing fact and evidence.

One possibility is to have a structure that you always use when unfamiliar with the topic to fall back on. That frees up your thinking capacity to focus on arguments. What I use is roughly: 1. Introduction (why the topic is important, what my main point is, how I intend to prove it) 2. Three arguments to support the main point. 3. Conclusion (short repetition of the main point and arguments, plus perhaps a sketching of potential further avenues of exploration of the topic). Of course, that only takes you that far. For example, suppose you talk nonsense about a hard science topic. In that case, you are just talking nonsense about a hard science topic, no matter how rhetorically convincing or structured your argumentation is.

It is always best to put your points of view across in an organised order Look at the argument in a constructive way and tell your audience what your about to deliver, deliver your presentation and then reaffirm the points you have just discussed

Go early and familiarise yourself with the enviornment you will be presenting in...check the space for ease of transfer..note what possible alterations can be made in the venue or how you might need to adapt .

I generally add an FAQ section at the end of my presentations so my answers to certain common questions are delivered upfront and more thought out structurally. It also avoids a lot of back and forth exchanges during the Q&A period because your audience already knows you are prepared and knowledgeable about the subject.

Refer to my experience as campus debater, following are the things that you should aware of: 1. Non verbal communication is somewhat very impactful in making adjudicators and “audience” believe in your statements. Do aware with your hand and body gesture, facial expressions, poise, eye contact, and other non verbal things. 2. The structure of delivering your ideas in limited amount of time is crucial. Don’t bubbling too much. Put some stress on highlighted statements. Rebuttal is a must. At the end of your time, you can put strong quote, restating yout position, or even asking very thoughtful question. Make the room remember you. 3. You are not a poet. Don’t complicate things. Use simple and “easy to understand” termination/wors.

When you practice and time your presentation, also anticipate where the audience may interrupt you to ask questions. Depending on the topic, you should know where discussion of certain things will immediately trigger unsolicited questions from the audience. Try to structure your presentation in a way that not only conveys information, but also answers questions at the same time. This way, the audience is less motivated to interrupt your presentation and it also demonstrates your subject matter expertise by providing answers to anticipated questions as you are presenting.

If you are to speak then stand in front of a mirror and practice your delivery. You need to be aware of the little idiosyncratic movements you may have whilst speaking, the odd tug of the ear lobe, the wringing of the hands etc. Often I may record as well and replay the speech to myself when driving or exercising. It gives you a clearer picture of the points you are trying to put across and highlights where changes are required

En mi experiencia practicar frente al espejo me ayuda para combatir los nervios, manejar mi lenguaje corporal y a su vez practicar lo que comentare, si bien en su momento no vas a repetir de memoria, pero hacer un ensayo te permite enfrentar de mejor forma la situación. Un tip adicional es realizar ejercicios de dicción previo al debate para evitar trabarte.

From experience it’s important to understand what a debate isn't. - a debate is not a battleground for personal attacks or hostility. It's about respectfully presenting your arguments and rebutting theirs. - a debate is not about winning at all costs. It's about convincing others through logic, evidence, and persuasion. - a debate is not a platform to monologue, preach or grandstand. Effective debaters listen attentively to their opponents, engage with their arguments thoughtfully, and respond accordingly. - a debate is not solely about individual performance. While preparation and delivery matter, teamwork and collaboration are equally vital.

In a business setting, we are all asked to volunteer to do various tasks beyond our own responsibilities. Some of these tasks can be beneficial to your career development and demonstrate being a good team player. However, you need to also be very selective where you want to contribute. Always lead with your strengths. All too often, we see people deliver a presentation where they are not familiar with the subject matter. I would suggest avoid presenting a topic where you have little to no knowledge of the subject matter. Most likely, you will be asked questions about this subject. Even if you mention at the beginning that you are not the subject matter expert, you still immediately lose credibility and your audience's attention.
