First need to have IT inventory data either through manual discovery or auto discovery. Identify all hardware, software, and data have on-premises, including applications, operating systems, databases, and storage systems and network requirements. Analyze their dependencies, usage patterns, security requirements, and compatibility with cloud platforms. Document their current performance metrics like resource utilization and latency. The second part is cost analysis. Estimate the costs associated with on-premises infrastructure (hardware maintenance, energy, licensing) and compare them with potential cloud service models (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS). Factor in migration costs, training expenses, and ongoing cloud service charges

Evaluate the compliance mandate and analyze industry regulations and data privacy requirements of the cloud provider must adhere to. Evaluate the cloud service provider offering and assess the provider's range of services (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS) and their alignment with your needs. First of all, clearly define the business goals you want to achieve with the cloud adoption. Is it cost reduction, improved agility, or enhanced scalability or cloud first or optimized for cloud. Analyze different providers based on the needs, budget, and compliance requirements and choose the deployment model on the needs for control, security, and scalability. Utilize features like auto-scaling and resource elasticity to accommodate changing workload. Implement security control and measure. Consider factors like network latency, data transfer costs, and resource allocation for optimal performance. Follow the provider's well-architected framework. Follow well-defined migration strategies and best practices.

An important aspect that gets overlooked are the cultural / ways of working practices that are so vital to get the max of your cloud investment. Do strategy / implementation aspire for empowered & autonomous delivery teams or infra ops are heavily centralised and outsourced behind service / incident queues. Is your mantra ‘you build it, you run it, you optimise it’ or do responsibilities remain largely segmented, dependent & coordinated Do your testing methods & release cycles still need long running and integrated environments or they also intend to run on on/demand infra / app (de) provisioning and elastic capacity models These org / process / skill aspects are key to max value possible vs just infra tech change with limited upside.

Cost is a big factor which would have led us to Cloud. So, its’s better to ensure we have cost dashboards that are monitored regularly as there could be some scenarios, where on-prem setup wins. Making sure to check how much the CPU is needed for what type of task/transaction/business for how longer is a key to migrate to cloud and use its’ service appropriately. Many areas somehow become quite relevant like security best practices, CI/CD setup, hybrid cloud setup, networking, optimization, processes, etc. At the end, the whole transition needs a 360 org. level view as it’s’ not only Tech. driven change in the ecosystem.
