Communication is paramount. In healthcare our business is humanity and while fun it is also emotionally and psychologically demanding. Avoid grey areas whenever possible and use your voice from your position and expertise openly and often. Do not be afraid of or offended by constructive criticism, rather tuck that learning experience into your pocket and use it in the future. There is no I in team and we're all better when we collectively move forward on actionable agendas. Communicate!

Life is a learning sentence and constant success is no educator I want. Failures teach. When failures occur be open and accepting of education and thought processes for improvement, then openly use and cite the instructor when you succeed. My favorite aspect of healthcare is when I learn more safe and efficient ways of patient care. If I can save money while improving outcomes I add tremendous value to myself as well as the organization but I am very open when sharing how and from who I learned the right ways.

Getting out of the comfort zones or echo chambers, and getting to know and network with leaders in healthcare and other industries is very beneficial. There are several learning and relatable pearls of information that we can learn from each other, even from different industries. If physicians or healthcare field has not had experience with a particular problem, and a different firm or industry has made strides or vice-versa, networking helps to understand and bring creative solutions. This brings intellectual diversity to become a better physician and a better leader.

You should evaluate and improve your networking and mentoring activities regularly, and measure your progress and outcomes.
