In my experience, main thing to have proper indexing on key columns where your data can easily retrieve. Also, at the same time Rebuild index regularly and database defragment is necessary; which help you to retrieve data fast. The another thing to use right joins in query. Not recommended to use DISTINCT while you're joining tables. Try to retrieve data from denormalized tables which also help your performance. Use CTE instead of subqueries which also help to improve performance. Limit the data in dataset if you do not require quite long historical data.
