1 Enable IPv6 Fast Reroute

IPv6 Fast Reroute (FRR) is a feature that allows routers to quickly switch to an alternate path in case of a link failure, without waiting for the routing protocol to converge. FRR fully supports IPv6 routing. As described so far, FRR supports RIPng, OSPFv3, and BGP-4+. You can give IPv6 addresses to an interface and configure static IPv6 routing information. FRR IPv6 also provides automatic address configuration via a feature called address auto configuration. To do it, the router must send router advertisement messages to the all nodes that exist on the network.

2 Use Extension Headers Wisely

IPv6 Extension Headers (EHs) are optional fields that provide additional functionality, such as routing, fragmentation, authentication, and encryption. However, EHs can also increase the packet size and processing time, which can affect the latency. To use EHs wisely, you should avoid unnecessary or redundant EHs, use the minimum number of EHs per packet, and place the EHs in the optimal order. For example, you should put the Routing Header before the Fragment Header, and the Authentication Header before the Encapsulating Security Payload Header.

4 Optimize IPv6 Addressing and Prefixes

IPv6 addressing and prefixes can have an effect on the latency of your network, depending on how they are designed and assigned. To ensure optimal performance, you should use global unicast addresses for public communication and unique local addresses for private communication. Additionally, you should use the shortest possible prefixes for your subnets and avoid overlapping or conflicting prefixes.
