As a freelance writer working from home/alone most of the time, it can get lonely — even for an introvert like myself. Fortunately, I've met a ton of fellow freelance writers and content industry peeps just by showing up regularly on LinkedIn, taking discovery calls, and setting up "coffee chats" from time to time. It's a great way to get to learn more about what others do and form a community where you help each other out when possible. When my friends do well, I do well. Here's what I mean by this... Early in my career, I attended the annual conference in NYC for the American Society of Journalists and Authors (ASJA). Although I knew many names, I didn't know faces, so I spent much of the weekend introducing myself and getting to know the writers in attendance. That one event probably did more for my subsequent writing career than anything. Now I regularly connect with many of those friends, either online on social media, through email or Messenger, or phone. We've stayed connected and regularly refer each other work, share ideas and suggestions, and generally support each other. Show up, be friendly, and offer to help other writers before asking anything of them and you will find how valuable events and workshops can be.

It may be a daunting idea when you first see this recommendation. There are so many of us who would prefer the opposite of a networking event, but pushing yourself out of the comfort zone for 2-3 hours a month will be a MASSIVE boost to your network and people skill. Each one you attend will bring you far more positives than any negatives your anxiety can think of.

Generally, the more specific to your area of interest, the better. UK examples include the Guild of Health Writers, the Medical Journalists' Association, the National Association of Writers in Education and the Association of British Science Writers, to name just a few. Try a Google search to find others in your field.

There will be times when you would be envious of already established creators/writers and would feel the weight of ego to reach out to them, whether it's for appreciating their work, or asking for help, or just having a conversation. But I'll tell you what? Sometimes, in order to reach your goal, you need to learn and that is possible when you start a conversation or a discussion.

I held myself for too long to finally approach others. But believe me, do that ASAP. They won't bite. Learn from their experiences, mistakes, tips, hacks, styles, etc. Make sure you don't instantly pitch-slap them as soon as you connect. Build a relationship first. Tell them what you admire about their work and how you're willing to learn more from them. Take your time. Stay on top of mind. You'll soon have a valuable network that'll refer you to new opportunities.

I have also more privately reached out to researchers I admire to tell them I appreciate their work. When readers contact me about my work, it always makes my day. People will happily engage with you if you are courteous and constructive.

One thing leads to another... I've been running a blog and an instagram a/c for a long time. While I was not able to dedicate time regularly or make much progress in terms of follower numbers and other numerics, I am always humbled to learn about friends and acquaintances who follow my work or read things I've written. Often times we just need a few people who believe in our work to encourage us, offer us work, or to connect us with someone they know. One thing leads to another.

You can also connect with writers and prospective clients through social media. There’s a rich community of freelance writers right here on LinkedIn. In addition to interacting with others’ posts, you should make a habit of posting yourself. Share your wins, losses, tips, and general experiences whenever you can. You’ll draw an audience of people that you can then nurture relationships with!
