How can you network with professionals outside of Hospitality Management?

Networking is very important nowadays. Clear perspective is a key requirement for this. In today’s world it is absolutely important to network with other industries as everything is interconnected. Having a pleasant personality with clear objectives as to why you want to network will make the work much easier.

I will play devil's advocate. This topic is not clear. Question is how can you grow your contact outside of hospitality? It does not imply that new contacts will enhance your professional life. And what does increasing contact base have to do with your goals? Do you have one? What setting goals does for you? It gives you a purpose. If a goal to enhance your biz you'll want to meet those who can add value for you. Invite contacts to your workplace, make the collaboration suggestion prior to their visit. Should you wish to expand your contacts outside the industry, it's easy to meet others by joining a group with like interests. I meet nearly everyone through sport. Instant uplifting social circles. You decide if for pers. or biz.

Actually it is not difficult at all. 1) We are in the Hospitality industry so a key focus is communication! Talk to guests and customers, get to know them and learn from them, they will give you insight that sometimes you don't come across and then you make an acquaintance 2)Get out and meet your suppliers instead of them coming to you as you will again meet people in the area/shop you visit. Do not always wait for them to come to you. Once you visit them then visit places surrounding them, it is amazing what you can seek out. 3)Open yourself up online to answer questions, join groups and interact (again it is hospitality what we do!) 4)Get some hobbies and meet people, learn new skills and practices. One thing I have found helpful with networking out of hospitality management is knowing your market first and what you want to achieve out of this networks. Having worked in the front office you find yourself with a diverse clientele, from the clientele you are able to pick what you can offer n how to network with these circles.

Really? You have interests in various areas. Find and join like groups. Or start one. This does not require a lengthy response. Just do it.

If you are in hospitality, you have a natural penchant for being personalble, friendly and curious. This is not about you it's about forming a realationsihip. It's human nature to want to speak about one's self-take advantage of this human trait. Be curious, ask away with respect. Remember, everyone has boundries. Be empathetic and really 'listen'. Do not offer advice - it's presumptious, unless asked. You will be liked.

Avoid overly aggressive or self-promotional tactics as they can be off-putting. Instead, aim to build rapport and trust. With family, friends and business colleagues, I prefer subtle networking. Sometimes, you can determine if time is right to talk. Learn to pick up on subtle attitudes over the phone...I know in 5 seconds if timing is good or bad when I ring someone. train your ears to pick up on one's mood instantly and take it from there. It may be better to reschedule. Be consistent but not bothesome.

In the expansive realm of learning, I find endless fascination in discovering insights beyond the boundaries of Hospitality. Hospitality, in my view, permeates all industries, and each sector offers unique lessons. A personal encounter with my hairdresser exemplifies this. While discussing Revenue Management, a staple in hospitality, he illuminated a different perspective. In the hairdressing industry, 100% occupancy isn't the goal; maintaining availability for spontaneous/new clients is key. Embracing insights from varied industries enriches our understanding and enables innovative applications within the dynamic realm of hospitality. The learning journey is boundless, with each interaction offering a potential shift in perspective.

Get out of your comfort zone. Attend a medical or sustainability conference, volunteer, sign up for lessons, learn, meet people from different walks of life. Expand your people base.

With other industries networking is quite easy and you also tend to learn alot, the only issue I could say I find at the end as hospitality industry we don't put into practice what we learn. We need to learn, unlearn and relearn what other industries have to offer and why they grow as much as they do without high employee turnover..

The best part is to understand that the hospitality industry is well connected with the rest of the industries. Taking the hotel industry or restaurant business as an example, you have guests staying coming from the rest of other industries in the world. Networking opportunities can simply start by identifying your guests' background information before they enter your premises then make sure you greet them properly and ask relevant questions about them to build rapport. The next step would be your job to follow up during the guest's stay or dining experience and post service-follow up to maintain the relationship with your guests.

Always stay true to yourself, and keep in mind that 'giving is more important than receiving' ?? Understand your core values, recognize what you can offer to others, and actively put them into practice.

Think outside the box. Hotels have a 24/7, sell rooms and provide food to guests, but so do restaurants and nursing homes. Accounting skills in hospitality transfer well to this part of the healthcare field. Also, work with a recruiter. Temp gigs can be a good way to get experience working in another industry.
